The second season premiere of HBO’s The Last of Us experienced a 10% increase in viewership compared to its debut during the first season. According to recent reports, a total of 5.3 million U.S. viewers watched the episode across various platforms on the same day, which is 10% higher than the 4.7 million viewers who watched the initial episode in 2023.
The inaugural season garnered the largest viewership for a premiere season on HBO to date, which sets high anticipation that the second season of The Last of Us will surpass these records.
Return of the Apocalypse
One of the most memorable post-apocalyptic series in gaming’s past is The Last of Us, which debuted in 2013 as a story-focused, single-player game developed by Naughty Dog, known for Uncharted. It caught everyone’s attention on PlayStation 3 back then, and it still does today.
2020 saw Naughty Dog unveil “The Last of Us Part II,” a video game that serves as the foundation for season two of HBO’s live-action adaptation. While the first season was based on the events of the initial game, the second game is more expansive and will likely require multiple seasons to fully portray its content.
As a devoted viewer myself, I’m thrilled to share that, according to a recent update from Deadline, more fans like us have been drawn to the second season compared to the first! Intriguingly, this growth amounts to a whopping 10% increase!
The increasing fame of the show hints at its potential continuation, though its prospects at Naughty Dog remain unclear. Initially, Neil Druckmann, the series’ originator, implied no more games would be made, but he subsequently retracted that statement.
The television show has received unwarranted critique, primarily directed at Bella Ramsay who embodies Ellie Williams in the series. For a long time, it’s been argued that her portrayal of the character is less than ideal, and her youthful look deviates significantly from the game character she’s modeled after.
It’s a sticking point, but viewership is up, and that’s all HBO really cares about.
Making use of the widespread appeal of the series, Naughty Dog has just launched The Last of Us All-Encompassing Edition, which includes not only The Last of Us but also The Last of Us Part II, exclusively for the PS5.
