Summary
- Season 2 of The Last of Us TV series won’t be a direct reenactment of the game’s story.
- The show’s producers plan to split The Last of Us Part 2 story arc into multiple seasons.
- The Last of Us TV series intends to have a definite end and won’t go past the game’s storyline.
In contrast to directly mirroring the second game, Season 2 of HBO’s The Last of Us TV series is expected to deviate from its source material. Moreover, the show’s creators have announced that unlike the second game, Season 2 won’t encompass the entire narrative arc of The Last of Us Part 2, instead, it will be extended over several seasons.
The number of seasons needed to adapt The Last of Us Part 2’s whole story for TV remains undetermined at this point, however, one fact that’s clear is, it won’t mirror the trajectory of Game of Thrones.
Don’t Expect The HBO The Last of Us TV Series To Overtake The Game’s Story

According to The Last of Us TV showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, they plan not to follow the same approach as HBO’s Game of Thrones series, which deviated from the source books’ plot after it branched out on its own.
In conversation with Hollywood Reporter, Mazin clarified, “I won’t extend the series beyond its scope. To set the record straight, there’s no intention of milking it for more money. Instead, I want the story to have a conclusion. The show is incredibly challenging to produce and deserves a definite end. So, I’m committed to wrapping up the story within a specific timeframe.
Mazin further notes, “Perhaps there’s a Dunk and Egg The Last of Us series on the horizon. For me, the key concern is whether it’ll be just one season or if it needs two. If it could all fit in one season, that would be ideal. However, if splitting it into two seems more appropriate, we’re prepared to do so.
As a dedicated game of thrones enthusiast, let me share a bit of my world. For those who might be newcomers, the hit HBO series Game of Thrones was inspired by George R.R. Martin’s epic saga, A Song of Ice and Fire. Interestingly enough, the books came first but the pace at which Martin wrote the sixth book, The Winds of Winter, was so leisurely that the TV show actually surpassed the plot from the books.
As an ardent enthusiast of Game of Thrones, the whole show was nothing short of extraordinary, except for the final season that seemed to unravel all the incredible groundwork laid out to conclude with a disappointing whimper. It got so bad that fans even rallied and petitioned HBO to redo the entire eight seasons in order to provide a satisfying finale to this epic series.
The second season of HBO’s The Last of Us debuts on April 13, and it looks promising so far judging by the previews we’ve seen. As stated by Neil Druckmann from Naughty Dog, while the TV series might deviate from the game, the fundamental essence remains intact, which is reassuring for both gamers and viewers of the show.
Regarding The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered game, it’s set to launch on PC this very week. To celebrate this release, developer Naughty Dog is planning to roll out an update for the console version as well. This update will include new trophies and additional features.
