The Last of Us Showrunners Address Spores Returning for Season 2

In simple terms, the showrunners of The Last of Us Season 2 have explained that there’s a significant plot point behind the reappearance of the fungal spores.

2 days ago, the new trailer for The Last of Us Season 2 dropped, and as a die-hard fan, I couldn’t help but notice a scene that hinted at the return of spores in the upcoming season. In the original Naughty Dog games, spores were the means by which the cordyceps virus propagated. However, for creative reasons, the showrunners opted to replace spores with tendrils in the first season, allowing for more screen time for our beloved cast members. Yet, it appears that they are reconsidering this decision with Season 2.

At SXSW 2025, representatives from The Last of Us Season 2 discussed the return of spores in the show. Druckmann began by revealing that not only will there be an increase in the number and variety of infected, but also a broadening of how this infection spreads in the upcoming season.

In his statement, Druckmann explains that tendrils were an innovation introduced during season 1. However, in the most recent trailer, viewers will notice a sequence featuring objects suspended in the air. At this juncture, Craig Mazin chips in, saying, “Spores are making a comeback.” Druckmann clarifies that “everything must have its dramatic element” and “there had to be a compelling reason for reintroducing it now, and there is.
