Summary
- The Monsterverse’s success has led to a sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.
- The Godzilla x Kong sequel has cast its first major star, with the sequel bolstering its ensemble of human characters.
- There is uncertainty about returning cast members from previous films in the franchise.
The Monsterverse has proven to be a massive hit, particularly with the thrilling confrontation between Godzilla and Kong in their respective films. As they gear up for the next chapter, this popular franchise is bringing on board a top-tier actor from HBO’s series “The Last of Us“.
The Monsterverse, created by Legendary Pictures, started in 2014 with Gareth Edwards’ movie Godzilla. This universe then introduced its key character, King Kong, in 2017’s film Kong: Skull Island, followed by their epic showdown in 2021’s Godzilla vs Kong. The latest sequel, titled Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, became the highest-grossing Monsterverse film, earning over $570 million at the global box office. Given such success, another movie was bound to happen. Currently, Legendary is working on the next chapter in the Monsterverse with David Callaham writing the script and Grant Sputore, a new addition to the franchise, directing it.
The Monsterverse Enlists A New Star
In the progression of the upcoming “Godzilla vs Kong” sequel, it’s been reported that Kaitlyn Dever is being considered for a leading role. If negotiations are successful, she could join the ensemble cast of this Monsterverse film. The project seems to be focusing on strengthening its human characters alongside the titans, Godzilla and Kong. Notably, Dever has starred in “Booksmart”, “Dopesick”, and will feature in Season 2 of HBO’s “The Last of Us” set for release in 2025.
Will Any Other Cast Members Return For the Godzilla x Kong Sequel?
Dever will join a roster of top-tier actors who have appeared in different Monsterverse films such as Millie Bobby Brown, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Brie Larson, Tom Hiddleston, Alexander Skarsgard, Vera Farmiga, and Julian Dennison. The movie “Godzilla vs Kong: The New Empire” showcased the skills of Rebecca Hall, Dan Stevens, and Brian Tyree Henry, although it’s uncertain if any of these actors will reappear in the upcoming sequel. At the Sundance Film Festival, Hall shared with Screen Rant that she hasn’t received any news about the Monsterverse sequel. “As far as I know, no one has asked me, so I don’t believe I’ll be a part of the next installment,” she disclosed.
In the latest installment, Kong and Godzilla joined forces to combat the villains from the Core of the Earth – Tiamut and Skull King among them. Following their triumph, Godzilla went back to his native Earth, whereas Kong assumed leadership of the ape tribe within Hollow Earth. The direction that Monsterverse intends to take this narrative is uncertain, but there are plenty more legendary titans lined up for on-screen debuts. The only definite detail known about the next Monsterverse film is its release date: March 26, 2027.
In addition to another Godzilla vs Kong movie, Legendary’s Monsterverse will carry on growing in a second season of Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, focusing on the evolution of the scientific organization called Monarch, responsible for monitoring and studying the planet’s colossal creatures.
The Untitled Godzilla x Kong sequel is scheduled to release on March 26, 2027.
