The Legend of Vox Machina Cast Talks Revisiting Their First Campaign

As a long-time fan of Critical Role and Vox Machina, I can’t help but feel a deep sense of nostalgia as I watch The Legend of Vox Machina enter its third season. Having followed their adventures since the early days of 2015, it’s like revisiting old friends who have been through thick and thin with you.

From its debut in 2015, the web series “Critical Role”, centered around “Dungeons and Dragons”, has showcased multiple main campaigns, numerous one-shots, spin-offs, and mini-series. In 2022, the initial campaign was transformed into an animated series titled “The Legend of Vox Machina“. Now, as we approach its third season, “The Legend of Vox Machina” is ready to confront the dragons of the Chroma Conclave. The actors, who reprise their roles in the animated series, have expressed joy at returning to “Vox Machina” after all these years, describing it as a comforting experience.

Game Rant recently had a chat with the main cast of “The Legend of Vox Machina”: Matthew Mercer, Marisha Ray, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, Sam Riegel, Ashley Johnson, Liam O’Brien, and Taliesin Jaffe. Each member was thrilled to be back in their “Vox Machina” roles for the upcoming animated series. Notably, Laura Bailey highlighted that the simultaneous development of “The Legend of Vox Machina”, the upcoming “Mighty Nein” animated series, and the ongoing “Bell’s Hells” campaign provide a one-of-a-kind opportunity for the cast to revel in all things “Critical Role”.

Returning To Vox Machina Brought Warmth, Comfort, And Familiarity

The original “Vox Machina Dungeons & Dragons” campaign spanned more than 100 episodes from 2015 to 2017. This group of heroes battled against vampires, gods, multi-colored dragons, and a host of other well-known adversaries. The cast was delighted to revisit the tale of “Vox Machina” through the animated series. Taliesin Jaffe expressed a fond feeling, likening it to seeing old friends from high school, while Laura Bailey concurred, stating similarly.

Returning here seems incredibly comforting, what with all the current happenings. Engrossed in Campaign Three and following the adventures of Mighty Nein in that animated series, each time I come back to Vox Machina, it’s like wrapping myself in a cozy blanket.

Marisha Ray, who portrays the druid Keyleth, experienced a mix of happiness and sorrow while working on “The Legend of Vox Machina”. For Ray, there’s a touch of melancholy in narrating their characters’ tales. During production, they were unsure about the outcome, but now they know that not every character will receive a positive ending. Yet, regardless of what transpires, the party remains bonded to one another, both within and beyond the storyline.

The Cast Was There To Support One Another

For the past ten years, this group has been enjoying Dungeons and Dragons games together, and they were overjoyed by their mutual backing. Known as Vox Machina, they created Season 3 amidst a bustling schedule – especially Matthew Mercer, who juggled his Critical Role responsibilities with roles in projects like Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth and Baldur’s Gate 3. Mercer expressed excitement, saying, “As friends working together, we can help each other out when needed, and offer support during challenging times.

Travis Willingham, well-known for his character Grog Strongjaw who maintains the group’s camaraderie with his consistent good spirits, concurred with the Dungeon Master of their group. He was thrilled at getting back into the dynamic of Vox Machina’s party in the animated series, likening it to their real-life bond. “It’s just us,” Willingham exclaimed, echoing his character’s excitement. “We’re against the world. It’s relatable.” He concluded by mirroring Mercer’s famous quote from the tabletop game sessions: “What are we going to do?” In real life and in Season 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina, the answer remains consistent: they’re going to face challenges together.
