As a seasoned survivalist who’s braved the unforgiving wilderness of Pleasant Valley to the frostbite-inducing heights of Timberwolf Mountain, I can confidently say that each region in this game offers its unique set of challenges. However, if I were to rank them based on my personal experiences, well, let me tell you, Bleak Inlet is a whole different beast!
2017 saw the introduction of “The Long Dark,” a game centered around single-player survival and exploration with a keen emphasis on realism. The narrative unfolds after a plane crash that leaves you stranded in the unforgiving Canadian wilderness, bereft of any rescue prospects. In this deserted world, humanity appears to have vanished abruptly, leaving behind their dwellings, tools, and provisions as remnants. As the island becomes your prison, you’re plunged into a struggle against the elements, where one misstep could be fatal. Ultimately, death serves as the grim conclusion of this tale.
In The Long Dark, the game map is divided into about a dozen distinct areas that are intricately linked together. Each of these zones features its own distinctive environments and spots. The level of challenge in these regions ranges from beginner-friendly to extremely tough, based on aspects like the number of predators, temperature conditions, and the availability of indoor locations.

8 Desolation Point
High Predator Density
At Desolation Point, you’ll find a compact coastal region with traces of the old whaling industry. The primary challenge here is the abundance of predators that roam these parts. Given its modest size and the large number of wolves, bears, and other carnivores, you’ll often encounter them. Additionally, the linear layout of the map makes it challenging to steer clear of these predators since they regularly patrol strategic spots. Due to scarcity of deer and cat tails, you might need to depend on stored food or hunt predator animals for sustenance.
Lucky for me as a player, Desolation Point is brimming with structures ripe for plunder and offering refuge. What’s more, the area isn’t expansive, meaning these structures are clustered close by, reducing the need for lengthy journeys.
7 Blackrock
Timberwolves & Adverse Weather
The area known as Blackrock is primarily urbanized and revolves around Blackrock Prison. This region is unique due to its timberwolf population, making it a must-visit for players who wish to settle here. It’s crucial to bring an abundance of marine flares if one intends to survive in this area. Unlike Desolation Point, Blackrock is frequently hit by blizzards, which can be lethal to the unprotected. Additionally, Blackrock Prison teems with predators, but it offers players a wealth of resources for crafting purposes.
In this area, there’s a plentiful supply of buildings, infrastructure, and vehicles that players can use for scavenging resources or seeking shelter from both harsh weather and timberwolves. This reduces some of the major hazards. Although blizzards occur often in this region, it’s not as freezing cold as other places.
6 Forlorn Muskeg
High Risk Of Exposure
The desolate expanse known as “Abandoned Muskeg” is a vast, frozen wetland split by an old train track that’s long been abandoned. With scarce structures and frequent blizzards and fog, this area poses considerable risk to players due to exposure. Even the most prepared adventurers can be taken off guard by sudden weather shifts. Delving into this region compels players to step away from the railway’s safety and navigate the treacherous marshland filled with weak ice. This fragile ice not only slows progress but also poses a deadly risk for those who fall through it.
In spite of its propensity for unfavorable weather, Forlorn Muskeg maintains a comfortably moderate base temperature. Under sunny conditions, it becomes simpler to steer clear of its predators and any potentially unsafe ice.
5 Ash Canyon
Few Buildings & Fatigue Risk
Ash Canyon is an expansive wild terrain characterized by deep valleys and high plateaus. The primary danger lies in its absence of structures, making it challenging for explorers to find shelter, supplies, suitable spots for fires, and resting places. Additionally, this area features numerous climbing ropes, which could lead to exhaustion or even death for ill-prepared adventurers or those caught in unfavorable weather. Moreover, Ash Canyon is known for its cold climate and frequent inclement weather conditions.
In contrast to many other areas, Ash Canyon offers a rare advantage: it’s largely predator-free. Adventurers who prefer higher ground will discover numerous spots ideal for establishing secure outdoor camps. Additionally, this area boasts an abundance of caves that provide protection from the weather.
4 Pleasant Valley
Vast Wilds & Awful Weather
The expansive area known as “Pleasant Valley” is primarily farmland enclosed by mountains. This region boasts vast stretches of untouched wilderness and few human-made structures, making it a long journey before encountering signs of civilization. To add, the valley experiences harsh weather conditions like freezing temperatures, frequent snowstorms, and strong winds. Even seasoned players can easily fall victim to exposure due to these extreme conditions. Moreover, the weather in Pleasant Valley can shift suddenly, leaving one vulnerable without proper shelter.
Adventurous individuals discovering this area will find numerous substantial structures filled with valuable treasures, providing excellent locations for establishing strongholds.
3 Timberwolf Mountain
Adverse Weather, Little Shelter, Lots Of Predators
The expansive area known as Timberwolf Mountain is dominated by its titular peak. Characterized by freezing temperatures, frequent snowstorms, and sparse construction with minimal indoor facilities, adventurers should equip themselves adequately before venturing into this harsh terrain. Proper cold-weather attire is essential for survival in the bitter cold. Even seasoned explorers with top-tier gear can meet an untimely end due to the extreme difficulty of locating sheltered spots for resting, preparing meals, or staying warm.
It’s recommended, too, that players come to the region with guns and flares aplenty, as the mountain is teeming with difficult-to-avoid wolves and bears.
2 Hushed River Valley
Total Wilderness & Abundant Predators
The Silent Canyon Landscape is an expansive wilderness, filled with deep valleys carved by numerous waterways. This chilly region boasts sparse shelters that are hard to locate, making it a formidable challenge even for seasoned adventurers. The scarcity of warm accommodations makes it simple for characters to succumb to their needs, as players often find themselves searching desperately for secure spots to rest, prepare meals, and stay warm. As a result, most players must construct their bases in the open or within caves. The prevalence of many predators further increases this danger.
Ice caves provide shelter from harsh weather conditions and dangerous predators; however, navigating them in darkness without a lantern can lead to becoming lost.
1 Bleak Inlet
Predator Filled Wilds
The vast and partially frozen cove known as Bleak Inlet bears the traces of past industrial work. Regardless of its industrial history, it offers limited interior spaces for players to seek refuge. The largest of these sanctuaries, named The Cannery, is further protected by an electric gate that can only be unlocked during auroras. Given that a timberwolf pack guards The Cannery, venturing into this building carries significant risk.
In addition to its stunning landscapes, this area is teeming with potentially lethal wildlife such as bears, moose, and wolf packs. Despite being equipped with an arsenal of weapons, flares, and provisions, players still face a high risk of danger here, earning it the reputation as the game’s most perilous region.
