Stephen King’s career as an author, especially in the horror genre, has rarely been a questionable choice. Not only is he one of the most popular writers on the planet, with his books selling millions worldwide, but Hollywood directors are constantly eager to adapt his novels into films. It’s hard to imagine a better life for this native of Maine.
A number of adaptations based on Stephen King’s works are currently being transformed into movies and TV series, such as “The Life Of Chuck,” “Welcome to Derry,” “The Long Walk” (written under the pseudonym Richard Bachman), “The Running Man,” and many more including “Carrie,” all in various stages of production. It’s become quite a task to keep count of how many of his books are making their way onto both big and small screens, which just goes to demonstrate the significant influence King wields over popular culture, and it appears this trend isn’t abating any time soon. However, one particular recent adaptation, drawn from a short story King wrote in 1980, has experienced remarkable success in its initial week of release, surpassing a significant box office milestone.
The Monkey Climbs To Box Office Milestone After Strong Opening

Under the guidance of director Osgood Perkins, who had previously achieved success with the hit horror film “Longlegs” last year, has seen yet another one of his movies gain significant popularity. Titled “The Monkey“, this movie revolves around two twin brothers who stumble upon a vintage toy monkey in their attic. Instead of being adorable and amusing, the toy becomes the focal point of a series of terrifying deaths. The film has garnered an impressive box office revenue of approximately $21 million, with over $15 million earned within a few days of its release. The remaining $6 million was contributed by the United Kingdom ($1.2 million) and Mexico ($990K).
Instead of simply aiming to surpass a remarkable benchmark for Neon, “The Monkey” might hit the $20 million threshold before the end of March, and could even make an explosive exit by exceeding $30 million during its second week in cinemas. It remains uncertain if it will break into Neon’s top 3, but its rapid ascent within a week underscores the film’s popularity among its horror fanbase. The movie features Theo James, Elijah Wood, Tatiana Maslany, Colin O’Brien, Christian Convery, and more in significant roles.
The likely reason for the success of “The Monkey” is King’s unwavering legendary status in Hollywood and Perkin’s triumph with “Longlegs.” Although it didn’t top the box office, it’s an impressive achievement for the director who has released just two films in eight months. With Perkin’s next film, “Keeper,” set to release in October 2025, we’ll see if he can keep up his winning streak.
