The Resident Evil games are famous for being scary and full of suspense. They’re known for creepy settings, disturbing stories about the Umbrella Corporation’s experiments, and terrifying monsters. But surprisingly, the series also features some really cheesy acting and over-the-top drama. This unusual combination is actually a big part of what makes the games so enjoyable, and it’s led to some truly strange and memorable moments throughout the series.
Over the years, this show has delivered some truly bizarre and funny scenes, ranging from scary to ridiculous – and sometimes both at the same time! Here are just a few examples of the wonderfully strange moments that fans love.
5. Chris Redfield Pummeling The Boulder
Resident Evil 5
One of the most talked-about aspects of the Resident Evil series is Chris Redfield’s physical transformation. We first meet Chris as a skilled S.T.A.R.S. operative in the original game. Between that game and Resident Evil 5, he joined the Bioterrorism Security Assessment Alliance and, during his missions – particularly in Africa – he got noticeably more muscular.
Chris Redfield’s incredible strength isn’t just for fighting enemies; he can also destroy objects with his bare hands. While chasing Wesker to prevent him from unleashing the Uroboros virus, Chris and Sheva find their path blocked by massive boulders. Luckily, Chris simply punches them aside – it’s over-the-top action movie stuff, and it’s a blast.
4. Ramon Salazar’s Walking Statue
Resident Evil 4
Ramon Salazar, the main villain in the castle section of Resident Evil 4, loves to make a grand spectacle of himself. He always manages to steal the show, and honestly, he expects to be the center of attention. There’s one moment in particular that’s so ridiculous it’s worth pointing out.
Later in the game, as Leon explores a large castle hallway, he comes across a massive statue of Salazar. It’s fitting that such a self-important man would have a showy monument built in his home, but this statue is more than just for show. It’s a giant, mechanical construct that Leon must climb – jumping between its hands to operate levers that raise platforms and open the path forward. As soon as Leon starts moving, the statue comes to life and begins walking towards him, forcing a quick escape through a door using timed button presses. The statue eventually falls into a pit, making it a brief but memorable obstacle. It’s an incredible scene, even if the statue’s function is completely over-the-top. The original game didn’t necessarily need a remake, but we’re happy it got one.
3. Jill Almost Becomes A Sandwich
Resident Evil
The game is known for its awkward dialogue, and this scene is a prime example. Early on, players quickly realize a shotgun is much better than the starting pistol, so finding only a broken one in a specific room is puzzling. They likely expect a complicated solution to fix it. However, the trick – when playing as Chris – is to simply swap the broken shotgun with a functional one found elsewhere. This action resets a surprisingly terrifying, yet silly, trap: a ceiling that suddenly drops down.
Jill Valentine’s part of the game is often simpler than Chris’s, thanks to things like better item management, and she also gets help from Barry Burton at crucial times. This is one of those moments – he’ll rescue her when she calls for help. Then, he delivers one of the most famous (and delightfully corny) lines in the series: “You were almost a Jill sandwich!” The deadpan way he says it just makes it even better. The updated version of the game tweaked the line a little, but it’s still wonderfully cheesy.
2. Tofu. Just Tofu
Resident Evil 2
Sometimes, the games are funny in a way that wasn’t planned. The infamous ‘master of unlocking’ glitch in early games is a good example – it became a classic joke by accident. It’s great to see that Capcom now deliberately includes silly elements. A perfect example is the character Tofu, who appears in Resident Evil 2 and its remake – and is, quite literally, a large block of tofu.
The 4th Survivor is a challenging extra mode featuring the popular character HUNK. Players control him as he tries to reach the rescue helicopter while carrying a virus sample, battling enemies with limited resources. It’s similar to an early version of the Mercenaries mode found in later games. There’s also The Tofu Survivor, which lets you play as a block of tofu instead of HUNK – it’s mostly a humorous change with weaker gear, unlocked by performing well in the main game. The remake simplifies unlocking this mode and expands it by introducing multiple types of tofu – like Konjac, Annin Tofu, and Flan – each with their own unique equipment to help overcome the challenges.
1. The Final Fight Against Ustanak
Resident Evil 6
Many fans don’t have a high opinion of Resident Evil 6. The game heavily leaned into fan service, which led to some awkward moments, especially in the storylines involving Leon and Chris. It also pushed the series towards more action-focused gameplay than ever before, resulting in over-the-top battles filled with quick-time events. A prime example is the final fight against the Ustanak in Jake Muller’s campaign, which is often considered the low point of the game.
The fight happens on a massive, dangerous metal structure high above a fiery pit. Unable to reach his gun, Jake is forced to fight the creature hand-to-hand. However, the combat felt a bit repetitive, relying heavily on quick button presses. While the fight was intense, the quick-time events and the fact that Jake was evenly matched with the enemy diminished the feeling of fear that villains like Mr. X and Nemesis created in previous games. The creature was thrown into the flames below, twisting and contorting in a dramatic scene reminiscent of the T-1000 from Terminator 2, a moment as flashy as Wesker’s death in the last game. Despite all this, the villain wasn’t completely defeated just yet.
