Even though the arc has concluded, the grisly and shocking deaths on Jeju Island remain a chilling memory. Among all the fallen characters, one death in “Solo Leveling” could be the most gruesome. Facing such immense power, no life is spared or invulnerable.
In Solo Leveling, it’s often the case that characters, regardless of importance, can meet a violent and gruesome demise. For instance, even the protagonist, Sung Jin-Woo, encounters a dangerous situation where he nearly perishes in a double dungeon. As the narrative unfolds, the violence escalates, with characters resorting to increasingly brutal tactics – particularly in the story arc on Jeju Island. The pursuit of power by the Ant King results in even more hunters meeting their end in shockingly gruesome ways.
This article contains major spoilers from Solo Leveling’s Jeju Island arc.
It’s Not S-Rank Hunter Akari Shimizu
Her Death Is Faster Than the Blink of an Eye

Among the shocking moments in “Solo Leveling,” none compare to the untimely demise of Akari Shimizu, a loss that has left an indelible mark not just on Jeju Island but throughout the entire series. This tragic event has sparked countless memes, particularly focusing on her final moments filled with laughter and camaraderie. Unfortunately, among all the Japanese S-rank hunters, Akari’s impact during the raid was cut short due to her sudden exit. Her last few seconds were overshadowed by a playful tease and a hearty laugh shared with a comrade, moments that cruelly concealed the grim reality of her fate. What makes this loss even more poignant is that in both the anime and manhwa adaptations, there’s no depiction of Akari casting healing or supportive magic for her fellow hunters before her untimely end.
Given the pace, it seems likely that we’ll eliminate all the ants well before the Korean team manages to destroy their queen. (Akari Shimizu)
Essentially, while Akari’s death may seem insignificant due to its swiftness, it was still a tragic event. Her demise was instantaneous, which might have been the least agonizing way to perish under the Ant King’s hands. Although her head was decapitated, the speed and likely lack of pain involved suggest she may not have felt a thing. In an instant, Akari transitioned from one of Japan’s most valuable hunters to its most useless S-rank healer.
It’s Not Mari Ishida Either
Her Death Is Just Another Decapitation

In much the same way as Akari Shimizu, Mari Ishida meets an untimely end on Jeju Island. Before she has a chance to comprehend her own death, her head strikes the ground. This tragic ending is particularly harsh for a hunter who was expected to inflict damage but was overshadowed by the overconfident and arrogant Goto Ryuji. During the raid, she obediently followed his instructions and executed his orders without question.
“This is strange. Neither Team Charlie nor Team Delta are responding.”—Mari Ishida
In my eyes, it’s clear that lodging with Goto Ryuji is the shrewdest choice for surviving this impending raid. Being in close proximity to him feels like the safest bet, considering his renown as Japan’s top hunter. Yet, it’s a peculiar twist of fate that lands Mari in a dire situation; she appears to be fortunate, in a grim sense, to meet her end swiftly through decapitation rather than succumbing to a prolonged, tormenting agony. It seems plausible that the Ant King indeed had a penchant for ending contests with a single, decisive blow to his opponents’ heads.
Who Has the Most Brutal Death on Jeju Island?
It’s Not Min Byung-Gu’s Death
In the series “Solo Leveling” season 2, while many might view Min Byung-Gu’s gruesome death as the most brutal on Jeju Island, the manner of the Ant King’s demise at the hands of Jin-Woo highlights a stark contrast in power. The fierce battle in episode 12 leaves no doubt that Jin-Woo significantly outmatches the Ant King.
Regardless of the powers and talents that the Ant Queen displays against Jin-Woo, her assaults have little impact on the strongest hunter. This leaves him unscathed, causing the Ant Queen to feel demoralized, doubting her own value and purpose. The mental torment she experiences is intensified by the physical pain inflicted by Jin-Woo’s attacks. Despite having regenerative abilities, the Ant Queen endures continuous disfigurement as Jin-Woo strikes critical areas more swiftly than she can recover.
“Is there really nothing I’m superior to this human in?”—Ant King to Jin-Woo
Among the deaths on Jeju Island, the Ant King’s could be the most gruesome and satisfying to witness for fans. As the Ant King struggles desperately to avoid his fate, Jin-Woo employs Ruler’s Authority to thwart his escape, leading inexorably to his doom.
Ultimately, the Ant Queen collapses onto her knees, gazing upward at her slayer with an air of anticipation, as if seeking a verdict for her impending fate. It is at this instant she comprehends that her life is about to cease, despite the immense authority she held. The Ant Queen, who orchestrated the grisliest deaths on Jeju Island, met her untimely demise not by any of those gruesome means, but rather at the hands of Jin-Woo in Solo Leveling.
