As a seasoned gamer and horror movie enthusiast who has seen it all, from Silent Hill to Outlast, I must say that Smile 2 has left me absolutely stunned – and not just because of the graphic violence or unsettling imagery. This movie is a rollercoaster ride of emotions, with its unique blend of suspense, horror, and a dash of dark comedy.

The second installment, titled “Smile 2“, serves as both a straight-forward and indirect continuation of the initial film. While the opening scene connects back to Joel from the first movie, the primary narrative centers around a pop star’s resurgence in the industry. Skye’s character experiences issues with substance abuse that ultimately result in a harrowing incident.

She’s on a new tour to showcase she still has the juice to be an idol but something keeps getting in her way. Is it her own self-doubts or is some curse behind it all? Either way, her journey leads to some truly grotesque deaths in Smile 2 that rival that of Alien: Romulus.

The film begins by showing Joel, the character from the previous movie, parked in his vehicle, planning an ambush on a man carrying Pumpkin Spice Frappuccinos. He guides this individual into a house, believing it to be the lair of the chief crime boss. Following a swift and graphic knife attack, there’s a fierce shootout involving numerous mobsters.

In this new version, Joel didn’t anticipate events unfolding as he apparently intended to break the curse. Instead, he finds himself in hiding from hostile mobsters who show up after the men Joel attacked meet their unfortunate end. This opening scene hints that the movie is considerably more violent than its predecessors or other adaptations, and it seems likely to be unsparing in its depiction of violence overall.

Although Paul didn’t meet his desired end in the mob house, he sadly succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter. In his desperate bid for freedom, he stepped out into the road where a speeding truck struck him fatally. Unlike some horror films that hint at death through a blood trail, this instance doesn’t shy away from showing Paul’s demise explicitly.

In the second installment of “Smile,” the filmmakers aim to showcase the gruesome impact a truck can have on a person. The scene is filled with splatters of blood and scattered internal organs, with Joel’s disfigured body at the center. It goes without saying that his funeral in the movie likely involved a closed casket.

As a devoted viewer, I quickly discover that Skye, the captivating protagonist, has a heart-wrenching past. In a tragic car accident, she lost her beloved boyfriend, Paul, forever. The incident also left deep, lasting scars not just on her physical body – her back and chest bearing the marks of the ordeal – but also on her emotional self. Moreover, she endures persistent agony that standard painkillers fail to alleviate.

In simpler terms, when it comes to obtaining something stronger, she’s limited to acquiring it from drug dealers due to her questionable history. When she exhausts her supply, Skye contacts her former dealer, Lewis. Upon meeting him, Lewis becomes extremely agitated, which later escalates into a terrifying incident where he claims to see a grotesque monster. In the end, he takes his life using a heavy weight, and the series portrays this tragic event in graphic detail.

3 Morris’ Brother

He Must Have Played A Lot Of Half-Life

In the movie, there’s a swift and almost overlooked death scene that doesn’t get much screen time. Throughout the film, I kept receiving mysterious texts from an unknown number. Since this parasitic killer creates hallucinations, viewers are tricked into thinking these messages were just figments of Skye’s imagination.

They are real though which leads Skye to a man named Morris. He’s a nurse who wants to help Skye end this curse because it took his brother. As he tells her, the movie shows a quick cut to Morris’ brother removing his own jaw with a crowbar. What would make him use a crowbar unless he played a lot of Half-Life?

2 Elizabeth

Using Mirror Shards Destructively

In the movie “Smile 2”, Skye’s mother Elizabeth appears primarily concerned with one matter: Skye embarking on a tour. Despite displaying unusual behavior, she refuses to acknowledge it. This tension reaches its peak following an accident where Skye regains consciousness.

In a hospital room, she’s lying in a bed beside her mother, announcing her regret that she can no longer join the music tour due to unspecified reasons. Following a heated disagreement, her mother transforms into an abnormal human being, displaying parasitic tendencies. In a shocking turn of events, she shatters a mirror and begins to mutilate herself, even going so far as to gouge out her own eye with a splintered piece of glass. The scene is undeniably distressing, but Skye finds herself in a state of confusion, believing that it was she who caused her mother’s demise.

At the closing of the film, viewers are left pondering a significant enigma: How far did the narrative extend past Lewis’ demise that might have been fabricated? The climactic moment presents Skye performing on stage, with her mother applauding from the afterlife alongside other fans. Is this scene an illusion or were all events following Lewis’ death illusory?

Movies that conclude in this manner might be frustrating, yet they spark intriguing conversations with loved ones later on. On stage, Skye experiences an Elden Ring-like ordeal as she encounters a demon forcing its way into her grotesquely elongated mouth. In response, she impales herself with a microphone. It appears that the audience’s reaction to this concert is less than enthusiastic.
