The iconic video game series, Final Fantasy, continues to astound and innovate, leaving an indelible mark on the gaming world. Its sixteenth major installment dared to change the gameplay dynamic by moving towards real-time action, a move that eliminated the option to switch party members or target elemental weaknesses. Despite criticism from even its most ardent critics regarding this shift, Final Fantasy has consistently proven itself by embracing reinvention and pushing the boundaries of its genre, reaching new heights each time.

In certain Final Fantasy titles, the roster of characters varies from a main hero supported by an ensemble, to a central figure whose personality can swing between cheerful and brooding. It wouldn’t be accurate to claim that all Final Fantasy protagonists are charming, but some characters undeniably shine due to their appealing personalities and polished demeanor, making them delightful companions in the game and fun to control.

5 Bartz Klauser

A Friendly, Boisterous Character Who Makes Friends Easily

In contrast to some other games within the Final Fantasy series, Final Fantasy 5 isn’t heavily focused on narrative but rather on its gameplay elements. The ability to switch jobs and excel at them is engaging, leading players to amass an impressive array of powerful techniques as they progress through this enjoyable journey. The story begins with Bartz and his chocobo, Boko, who gradually encounter the other key characters that will significantly impact the struggle against Exdeath.

In contrast to many other games within the “Final Fantasy” series, “Final Fantasy 5” carries a more upbeat atmosphere, even amidst serious events. This is particularly evident in the character of Bartz, who is remarkably cordial and quickly forges connections with new acquaintances. There’s something endearing about him, making him stand out in a game where the narrative takes a backseat to its engaging gameplay mechanics, which underscores his captivating personality.

4 Vaan

A Chirpy Urchin Who Loves To Be The Leader

In the game Final Fantasy 12, it’s often pointed out that the characters don’t have a single main character. Instead, Ashe’s mission to save her kingdom seems more central to the story than Vaan’s dream of becoming a sky pirate, even though he was the first character we met in the game. However, some argue that Vaan is indeed the protagonist because he gets a lot of screen time, particularly at the start of Final Fantasy 12.

Fans have mixed feelings about Vaan – while they appreciate his outspoken personality, it often lands him in trouble, yet it’s also what endears him to others. Despite this, there’s no arguing that Vaan is incredibly charismatic, and he has a knack for resolving conflicts and making strong friendships. He relishes his role as a leader, solidifying his standing as a captivating protagonist in the world of Final Fantasy.

3 Tidus

Overenthusiastic And Easy To Approach

One of the standout titles in the Final Fantasy series is the tenth installment, renowned for its action-packed battles and one of the most captivating narratives found within any Final Fantasy game. The main character, Tidus, a cheerful Blitzball player, finds himself transported into the world of Spira, becoming embroiled in a timeless struggle against Sin. Initially appearing as an overexcited youth, Tidus’ unwavering optimism adds an endearing charm to his character, making him a captivating protagonist within the Final Fantasy franchise.

As a gamer, I can’t help but feel a deep connection with the character Tidus from Final Fantasy X. His romance with Yuna is one of the most moving stories ever told in this game series, and the bittersweet conclusion leaves an indelible mark. It turns out that Tidus, with his captivating charm, was a Spirit of the Fayth, summoned to this troubled world to save Spira from the endless devastation wrought by Sin and Yu Yevon. This tale is nothing short of enchanting, and even those who are most critical of Tidus can’t help but be won over by his irresistible allure.

2 Zack Fair

A SOLDIER With A Heart Of Gold

Regardless of having only brief appearances in Final Fantasy 7, Zack’s legendary status is evident, as he swiftly emerged as one of the most memorable characters within the game. His selfless act played a significant role in fueling Cloud’s journey through the central narrative, until eventually he understood how the Mako contamination had affected his recollections. Ultimately, Square Enix relented and enabled players to control Zack in a Final Fantasy 7 spin-off named Crisis Core, which delves deeper into his character, unfolding events prior to the main game timeline.

The action-packed game, “Crisis Core”, was remade, allowing players to reconnect with the captivating character of Zack once more. His unending charm was a significant factor in Aerith’s love for him, and fans of the remake trilogy were thrilled to see Zack take a prominent role in “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth”. Despite some missing the original voice actor who won many hearts when “Crisis Core” first came out on PSP, Zack’s charismatic persona is undeniable, regardless of who voices him.

1 Zidane Tribal

A Silver-Tongued Thief Who Is Bursting With Energy

In contrast to some more somber games within the series, Final Fantasy 9 stands out as a fan favorite, offering a return to the franchise’s origins while incorporating contemporary advancements that solidified its reputation as a popular Japanese Role-Playing Game (JRPG) in the Western world. The characters of Final Fantasy 9 are among the most adored in the series, with Zidane‘s charm making him one of the most upbeat and admired protagonists in the series.

Zidane’s playful demeanor is immediately noticeable upon his introduction, marked by his mischievous behavior that wins hearts, despite causing annoyance to those around him at times. Yet, it doesn’t take long for his companions to grow fond of Zidane, as his infectious charm shines through in every instance he boosts the group’s spirits and endears himself to others. Watching Garnet fall for him and Steiner eventually recognize him and let go of their animosity creates a deeply satisfying character development journey.
