In the realm of shonen anime, while Solo Leveling and Jujutsu Kaisen have gained significant popularity, it is Demon Slayer that stands out as the undisputed heavyweight champion. This captivating series unfolds in 20th-century Japan, where a group of skilled swordsmen known as the Demon Slayer Corps, are tasked with eliminating hordes of demons that jeopardize societal peace. Led by the accomplished demon slayer, Tanjiro Kamado, and his demonic sister, Nezuko Kamado, they rise through the ranks of the Demon Slayer Corps, their ultimate goal being to eradicate Muzan Kibutsuji, the Demon King, from the world.
Demon Slayer is more than just thrilling battle scenes; this globally acclaimed anime is also known for its deeply nuanced characters. These complex personalities, who have endured challenging backgrounds or harrowing experiences that have molded them, play a significant role in the storyline of Demon Slayer, enhancing its overall quality.
6. Tanjiro Kamado
This Generous Protagonist Picks Up The Pieces Of A Fractured Adolescence
- First Appearance: Episode 1
The principal character of Demon Slayer, Tanjiro – a gentle and compassionate individual – faces numerous obstacles and hardships on his journey to becoming the sword-wielding hero determined to combat Muzan. Notably, Tanjiro often hesitates to view demons as inherently wicked, and instead frequently reminds us that each demon was once human.
Often showing understanding for his adversaries, Tanjiro stands apart from other members of the Demon Slayer Corps, who primarily fight for retribution. Unlike many others, Tanjiro’s tumultuous past and deep bond with his demon sister Nezuko have shaped a unique perspective within him. This complex blend of grief, unwavering determination, and compassion makes the evolving swordsman an intriguing character at the core of this captivating anime series.
5. Akaza
An Upper Rank Demon Caught In A Bind
- First Appearance: Demon Slayer: The Movie – Mugen Train
Among the top demons in their hierarchy, Akaza stands out as a complex character who exhibits more depth than just plain evil, as portrayed by many other demons. He first appears during the Mugen Train arc and immediately poses a threat to Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke, and Kyojuro Rengoku, a Hashira demon slayer. Despite being an antagonist, Akaza tries to reason with Rengoku, appealing to join the demons. It appears that he feels his abilities are underutilized and prefers not to display unmitigated hostility towards humans.
In brief encounters, Akaza seems to grapple with his self-image. Tanjiro’s assertions of cowardice and Akaza’s actions around Muzan and higher-rank demons hint at internal turmoil within him. As the story unfolds in Demon Slayer‘s concluding chapters within the Infinity Castle, more details about his background and character are expected to emerge.
4. Kokushibo
The Upper Moon One Demon Is Brimming With Mysticism
- First Appearance: Episode 45
Apart from Muzan, Kokushibo is recognized as the second strongest demon in existence, holding the title of Upper Moon One. This multi-eyed demon has emerged as a substantial influence within the Infinity Castle Arc. At his debut, Kokushibo’s peers show him an unwavering respect due to his composed and tranquil demeanor, which underscores his immense power and refinement even among demons. Adopting a samurai-like appearance, Kokushibo exudes the air of a rational human being, in stark contrast to his peers who crave the violence and savagery associated with humans.
So far in the Hashira Training Arc, Kokushibo has had limited appearances. But as we move forward into the next arc, this intricate demon who seems to share a likeness with Yoriichi Tsugikuni will likely take center stage. The marks on his skin, reminiscent of Tanjiro’s, only serve to heighten the mysteries unfolding in the story.
3. Kagaya Ubuyashiki
The Head Of The Demon Slayer Order Carries Himself With Much Mystery And Grace
- First Appearance: Episode 15
The well-known and enigmatic head of the Demon Slayer Organization, Kagaya Ubuyashiki, is a frail man who commands unwavering admiration from the Hashira. Since childhood, he exuded an otherworldly aura. Belonging to Muzan’s cursed lineage, Ubuyashiki doesn’t wallow in regret for the destruction his forebear wrought upon Japan. Instead, he assumes responsibility for Muzan’s actions, electing to devote his life to annihilating his existence alongside the Demon Slayer Organization.
In the anime series “Demon Slayer,” Ubuyashiki frequently appeared and met an intense demise. His actions consistently prioritized peace, which was unusual for his role in confronting oppressive forces. Instead of following typical genre patterns, he approached these situations calmly.
2. Sanemi Shinazugawa
An Aggressive Hashira Whose Challenging Upbringing Influences His Behavior As An Adult
- First Appearance: Episode 22
In the world of Demon Slayer Corps, Sanemi Shinazugawa, renowned for his formidable strength, is not just a fierce and impulsive Hashira as he appears to be. Delving deeper into his past, as shown in Genya Shinazugawa’s flashback, we find that Sanemi and Genya endured hardships of poverty, where a tragic event took the lives of their father, mother, and siblings. The series presents a poignant moment when Genya harbors resentment towards Sanemi for his mother’s death.
In my observation, the hardships and traumas that marked Sanemi’s childhood have molded him into the person he is today, fueling his aggressive demeanor with an intense need to safeguard those dear to him. The weight of survival guilt seems to resonate deeply within the Wind Hashira. Beneath the surface, Sanemi carries a wealth of unspoken pain and past horrors that frequently push him towards a disheartening downward spiral. It’s a tragic situation for a character who has endured more than many others.
1. Muzan Kibutsuji
A Demon King Who Is Terrified Of Death
- First Appearance: Episode 6
Muzan, often referred to as the formidable demon ruler and the arch-nemesis of the Demon Slayer Corps, might just be the most intricate character in Demon Slayer. For over a millennium, Muzan has reigned in secrecy, always on edge due to his fear of demise. This persistent apprehension has made Muzan rather insecure beneath his tough exterior, and he strives to conceal his discontent and unease while presenting himself as a self-assured and mighty figure to the world at large.
In the course of ‘Demon Slayer’, many viewers pondered over Muzan’s motive behind pursuing immortality. However, it was only later that we learn that he is after the elusive Blue Spider Lily, or a demon capable of withstanding daylight similar to Nezuko. The unveiling of the Blue Spider Lily and Nezuko’s progression has paved the way for the final chapter in ‘Demon Slayer’, as Muzan and his intricate personality take center stage during the ‘Infinity Castle’ arc.
