In every season of the show called “Squid Game“, many lives are lost. However, some of these losses are more poignant than others. The reasons behind the characters participating in the games or the events preceding their unfortunate end can evoke strong emotions from the viewers.

In Squid Game, it’s often the demise of beloved characters that leaves the greatest impact, but there are also less prominent figures whose deaths resonate just as deeply. Some meet their end due to betrayal from those they trusted, while others make the ultimate sacrifice to prolong the lives of others. Consequently, numerous tears have been shed in response to these moving departures.

8. Player 069

Most of the saddest deaths in Squid Game involve characters who have been well-developed, with one notable exception during the first season. Unlike most characters, viewers don’t get to learn Player 069’s name, and there isn’t much information given about him other than the fact that he and his wife are participating together to pay off their debts.

In the heat of the game called Marbles, Player 069 became enraged and attacked his partner during one of the rounds. This act of violence led him to lose all desire to live. Overwhelmed by remorse and grief, Player 069 ultimately chose to end his life, serving as a poignant reminder of the potentially devastating emotional impact that a seemingly innocent game like Marbles can have on its players.

7. Ji-yeong

Just like Player 069’s wife and many others, Player 240 died while playing Marbles. However, instead of competing and losing, Ji-yeong chose to give up her life so that Sae-byeok could live on. Although Sae-byeok ultimately lost her life a few episodes later, this selfless act doesn’t lessen the sadness it brings.

In the hit series “Squid Game,” character development for most characters unfolds across multiple episodes. However, Ji-yeong’s character growth is primarily showcased in the Season 1 episode titled “Gganbu.” Her dialogue with Sae-byeok provides significant insight into her personality and carries a sense of final confession. Consequently, when she expresses gratitude towards Sae-byeok for their playtime together, it’s challenging not to feel emotional.

6. Oh Mal-soon

In the popular series Squid Game, many emotional deaths occur at the main games, but there are also a few poignant ones that transpire beyond these games. One such heart-wrenching death is that of Gi-hun’s elderly mother, Oh Mal-soon. Although viewers do not witness her passing directly, her offscreen demise might make it more profound and affecting.

Oh Mal-soon labored tirelessly day after day, using her hands to their limits just to live and care for a son who showed no gratitude, frequently taking money from her. This continual theft brought her endless sorrow and anxiety. When she eventually fell ill due to diabetes complications, Gi-hun was nowhere in sight, leading to Oh Mal-soon passing away alone, unaware of her son’s whereabouts.

5. Kim Jeong-rae

Gi-hun’s Loan Shark

Beyond merely causing harm to those around him, Gi-hun’s gambling addiction pushes him into taking substantial loans from a lender named Mr. Kim. This debt, in turn, propels him into the games. While audiences might perceive Mr. Kim as an evil character due to his role as a loan shark, it’s important to note that he isn’t irredeemable entirely.

Gi-hun’s gambling addiction not only hurts those near him but also leads him to borrow huge sums from a man called Mr. Kim, who is a loan shark. This debt eventually forces Gi-hun into playing the games. Initially, viewers might consider Mr. Kim as a wicked individual due to his job, but he’s not completely irredeemable.

Both versions aim to convey the same message in easy-to-read language.

In Season 2 of Squid Game, Gi-hun teams up with Mr. Kim to locate the recruitment agent. Eventually, they track him down, but not for long as Mr. Kim gets abducted by a ruthless player of Ddakji, who makes him compete in a lethal two-player game against one of his associates, Choi Woo-seok. Overwhelmed, Woo-seok finds himself at a disadvantage, but Mr. Kim selflessly chooses to forfeit the game, demonstrating that he had some moral fiber after all.

4. Park Jung-bae

Compared to its predecessor, Season 2 of Squid Game featured a faster tempo and fewer episodes, resulting in it having fewer standout characters. Interestingly, one of the most memorable characters wasn’t introduced in Season 2 at all; Park Jung-bae made his debut during the initial episode, Red Light, Green Light, where he was depicted as one of Gi-hun’s gambling companions.

The friendship between these characters unfolds more deeply in the second season of the series, revealing it to be grounded in much more than just a shared addiction. In numerous aspects, Jung-bae emerges as an exceptional sidekick, ready to accompany Gi-hun wherever he goes, even to the farthest corners of the globe if necessary. Tragically, this loyalty leads to Jung-bae’s demise, as he is among those who are shot and killed during Gi-hun’s unsuccessful uprising.

3. Kang Sae-byeok

As a devoted fan, I’d like to clarify that while many characters in Squid Game seem trapped due to their past life decisions, that’s not entirely true for everyone. Take the character of Sae-byeok, for instance. Having bravely fled North Korea, she chose to participate in these deadly games with a noble intention – to secure her younger brother’s safe passage across the border. Admittedly, it may appear as a questionable choice, but few would dispute that it was a selfless one.

Despite Gi-hun fulfilling his commitment and assisting Sae-byeok’s brother, she never learns whether he’ll keep his word or make it through the final game. This is heartbreaking on its own, but what truly strikes the audience is the scene of Sae-byeok’s last moments, where a young girl expresses her wish to return home to Gi-hun before she dies.

2. Oh Il-nam

In Gganbu, though the old man ultimately revealed himself as one of the antagonists and didn’t truly perish at the story’s end, the scene where it seemed he had met his demise was undeniably heart-wrenching. Despite being based on deceit, his connection with Gi-hun felt incredibly genuine, making him a beloved character among fans up until that tragic moment.

001 served as a paternal figure for Gi-hun, a role he had been lacking and longed for. This made their partnership in the Marbles game particularly poignant. However, when Gi-hun attempted to deceive Il-nam into giving him all his marbles, it became clear that everyone harbors a shadowy aspect, even a seemingly benevolent figure like Il-nam. Eventually, it was revealed that Il-nam had been allowing Gi-hun to win, teaching us and Gi-hun valuable lessons about ourselves through this interaction.

1. Abdul Ali

Player 199 (33rd Squid Game)

In the initial episode of “Squid Game”, Ali saved Gi-hun from certain death. This kind-hearted giant then formed an alliance with Gi-hun and a few other players, which proved crucial for their survival throughout several subsequent games. Regrettably, this partnership led to Ali teaming up with Sang-woo during the Marbles game.

In the popular series, Squid Game, Ali stands out for his kindness. However, his trusting disposition puts him at risk for manipulation by Sang-woo. Even though they competed honestly, Sang-woo dishonestly replaced Ali’s marbles with pebbles in a ruthless move to save himself, creating one of the most significant betrayals ever seen on television. The heart-wrenching expression on Ali’s face when he discovers his error leaves many viewers emotionally drained, solidifying Sang-woo as one of the most cowardly characters in Squid Game thus far.
