One Piece is a story that knows how to break your heart, and for all the humor and adventure, it still has its heartbreaking moments. In this vein, no matter how hard the journey is or the laughter that permeates the series, some moments are still sad.
Some character deaths in the One Piece series leave a lasting impact on fans, serving as a stark reminder that achieving dreams often requires sacrifice. What makes these character deaths particularly poignant is their lingering effect even as the narrative progresses.
10. Shimotsuki Yasuie
A Matyr For Wano’s Future
Since the liberation of Wano is nigh and Orochi and his forces almost discovered the covert operation, Yasuie made himself a scapegoat. To kill the spirit of rebellion in the heart of the Samurais, Orochi publicly executed Yasuie because he used to be one of the Damiyos, and his execution would serve as a warning to anyone who might oppose the Shogun.
However, Yasuie turned the execution into a self-sacrifice. Before his capture, he altered the secret message circulating among the Samurai rebels, misleading Orochi and buying time for the rebellion.
If Yasuie’s death didn’t affect you, consider the heart-wrenching scene where Toko witnessed her father’s demise, unable to weep freely but still finding herself smiling despite the tears. Reflect on the immense loss that unfolded in that moment.
9. Donquixote Rosinanate (Corazon)
The Final Act Of Love

Rosinante’s life was shaped by tragedy as a child, with his family’s fall from grace and the death of his father at the hands of his brother. Yet, Rosinante has so much love in a world that has given him every reason to turn cold like his brother.
The selfless love that Rosinante has for Law carries weight because he has no obligation to save him from the White Lead disease. Instead, he defied his brother, Doflamingo, to give Law a future.
Ultimately, Rosinante prevailed, while Law lived on, albeit at the price of his own life. His solitary last moments amidst the snow, struggling to cling to existence and secure Law’s freedom, marked the poignant climax of a truly remarkable figure.
8. Pedro
A Noble Sacrifice

During the voyage to Whole Cake Island, Pedro found hope in the Ninja-Pirate-Mink-Samurai alliance and the hope for a new change. He saw something in the Straw Hats, in Luffy, that convinced him they were the ones that would bring that change.
When it was necessary, Pedro put his life on the line to help his friends escape from Whole Cake Island. Pedro did not hesitate in assisting his companions and maintaining their alliance because, as far as he was concerned, sacrificing himself was the appropriate decision and the right one.
In this sense, he did not die for glory, but so that the people he believed in could keep going.
7. Fisher Tiger
A Hero Who Lost To Hatred

On Fishman Island, Fisher Tiger was a hero, and he broke into Mariejois to free slaves and give them a new beginning. However, no matter his glorious or heroic deeds, the world only saw him as an abomination because of his Fishman lineage.
Ultimately, Fisher Tiger’s pursuit of coexistence between fishmen and humans proved futile as he passed away after rejecting a human blood transfusion. This rejection served as his last stand, symbolizing that fishmen can live independently without the aid of humans.
His death is heartbreaking because he died with the thought that no matter how much he fought, the world still refused to change.
6. The Scholars Of Ohara
The Price Of Seeking The Truth

In One Piece, when an ordinary man tries to seek the truth or justice, it usually ends in horror. And for the scholars of Ohara, their pursuit of the truth was their death sentence.
The Ohara people did not plot a war or plan to overthrow the government; their only crime was seeking the truth about the Void Century, and the World Government silenced them with the Buster Call. Even though the Ohara people knew the consequences of their actions, they continued to fight for the truth, the future generations, and the right to know.
Their final attempt to save the knowledge they had spent their lives uncovering so it wouldn’t be lost forever was heroic.
5. Portgas D. Ace
A Brother’s Sacrifice

Ace has always questioned his existence, mainly because he is the son of the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. He has always carried the world on his shoulders because he knows the world wanted him dead before he had a chance to live.
During his final moments in Marineford, we all knew that his survival was possible until the moment it was not. Ace died with a smile because, for the first time, he knew he was loved because no one wages war for someone who is unloved.
Despite Ace’s passing, the impact of his death remains evident in the development of Luffy and Sabo, as they both embody Ace’s spirit by wielding the powers of the Flame-Flame Fruit (Mera Mera no Mi).
4. Kozuki Oden
The Man Who Endured Fire

Oden sailed with the Whitebeard and Roger pirates, and he returned to Wano because his people needed him. However, his beloved country soon turned sour with Orochi and Kaido’s scheme to take over Wano.
To protect his people, Oden humiliated himself by dancing like a fool in the street for five years. After he realizes his betrayal, Oden fights Kaido and loses.
In the aftermath of the battle, Oden was boiled alive while he held his retainers above the oil because they were Wano’s last hope for a great future. If you didn’t feel the weight of that moment, perhaps you weren’t paying attention.
3. Going Merry
More Than Just A Vessel

For fans of the series, The Going Merry’s last stand is the one time we grieved for a non-human figure that embodies human feelings. As for the Straw Hats, the Merry was a home and a vessel that carried them through East Blue down to the treacherous water of the Grand Line.
The Merry, their beloved ship, is not invincible and had reached its limits, but it didn’t give up on the Straw Hats when they needed it most at Enies Lobby. In fact, despite being damaged, the Merry managed to help them during their toughest times.
The funeral of the Merry right on the sea where it belonged and its final goodbye, it spoke:
I’m sorry. I wanted to carry you a little farther”.
In this vein, the Going Merry died the way it had always lived by putting its crew first till the very end.
2. Dr. Hiriluk
A Doctor Who Cured More Than Illness

Hiriluk believed in the power of miracles, and his goal was to see a cherry blossom in the harsh climate of Drum Island and instill hope in its people. Because he was a hopeful and kind doctor, he took in Chopper, an outcast, and gave him love and a reason to keep living.
In the series, Hiriluk was not just fighting against Wapol, the greedy tyrant king, but against the despair that had taken hold of the people of the Island. In his final moments, he took his own life on his terms, thereby leaving a lesson that inspired Chopper to become a great doctor and hope for the people of Drum Island.
Additionally, he held the view that a person’s real death occurs when they are no longer remembered, and it wasn’t only Wapol Hiriluk was referring to, but rather you as well. If you continue to recall him, then in essence, he has not met his final demise.
1. Russian
A Tragic Love Story

Russian was just a woman who fell in love with a man she thought she knew and built a life with him. When her infant son died, her world crashed, and she found out she had married someone who had lied to her for years.
The grief took a toll on her, and she stormed out of the house on a rainy night when a mudslide fell over her and put her in a vegetative state. When her husband realized that the only time she smiled was when he dressed like their dead infants, he continued to wear the ridiculous baby outfits even after she died.
People might have forgotten Russian because she was not a major character, but her story and how she shaped and shattered one man’s heart makes it tragic.
