Summary
- Ana’s high healing and utility dominated season one, marking an era of unmatched power and effectiveness.
- Moira’s AoE healing ushered in the “Quad tank” meta without requiring high mechanical skill from players.
- Brigitte’s destructive release made her the most overpowered hero in Overwatch history, leading to the “GOATS” composition.
Maintaining a multiplayer game such as Overwatch can be quite challenging. Regardless of the passage of years, frequent updates, or player complaints, it’s almost guaranteed that some characters will outperform others at different stages.
Despite the fact that there’s a significant distinction between a robust hero and one that’s almost beyond repair, Overwatch has encountered its share of characters exhibiting extraordinary power levels. This power can be seen in excessive healing numbers or extreme damage output, displayed by both veteran and novice heroes. These are, in essence, the most overpowering versions of heroes ever seen in Overwatch’s history.
8. Ana
High Heals, Insane Utility
Ana has been in the game nearly since its beginning, being the first character added post-launch. Unfortunately, some newer players might not have experienced the full force of her debut, which dominated season one with incredibly high healing rates and a utility far beyond any other character’s reach at that time.
Her gear has stayed consistent throughout the years, and she’s frequently been seen entering and exiting the game, both as part of strategic combinations and for her overall power. Upon her initial introduction to the game, she quickly gained popularity with a high selection rate and an equally impressive win rate that persisted through subsequent seasons. This longevity can be attributed to her high level of control, skill demonstration, and versatility across various team compositions.
7. Moira
Bringing In A Whole New Meta
In 2017, Moira burst onto the scene, boasting unprecedented area-of-effect healing capabilities that no other healer could match. Her toolkit is straightforward and intuitive, allowing even novice players to excel by providing an impressive amount of healing output without needing advanced techniques or personal flair.
In much the same way as many other celebrated figures, Moira’s arrival introduced a unique team composition, which came to be known as “Quad tank.” This setup featured an entire team composed of tanks, with Lucio providing speed and Moira offering mass healing. These teams were able to swiftly capture points due to the intense durability provided by the overpowered nature of this seemingly absurd support hero.
6. Roadhog
A Tank That Also One-Shots From Across The Map
Over the span of the game, Roadhog has experienced periods of being significant and insignificant multiple times. Initially, he was highly popular among players, but later saw a decline, only to regain popularity recently in modes such as Stadium. His fluctuating relevance is primarily due to his hook ability, which can either successfully pull players through up to 10 different walls or fail completely one moment.
At the height of his abilities, Roadhog was consistently dealing lethal blows to characters with 200HP from a distance using his right-click, and he was essentially eliminating any tank who came too near. For skilled players, an eight-second recharge time on his hook ability meant they could secure a kill every eight seconds, either through an environmental finish or a powerful barrage of shots directly to the face.
5. Sigma
Enough Shields And Damage For A Whole Team
In the world of Overwatch, Sigma’s kit is often a subject of controversy due to its versatile nature. Initially, he possessed a shield comparable to Reinhardt’s, a projectile ability similar to D.Va’s, a lethal combo that could instantaneously eliminate any hero with 200 health points and no defense against it, and a powerful ultimate capable of annihilating entire teams under favorable conditions. He was essentially an unmatched master of all trades, leaving no other character to compare.
With a slightly reduced stun ability, Sigma continued to be a key figure in the game meta, fostering the emergence of dual-shield strategies that leveraged his utility and shield management skills to absorb damage and retaliate with potent attacks. Though not as lethal as before, Sigma still presents a formidable danger on the battlefield.
4. Sombra
More Reworks Than You Can Count
Sombra is often a character that Blizzard’s Overwatch team finds difficult to balance effectively. Sometimes she earns her ultimate ability in just 30 seconds, while other times she can instantly defeat a support character without any viable response from the opposing team. Throughout her time in the game, there have been numerous instances where she has excelled significantly, but none were as problematic as when she was first introduced.
Her initial attempt stood out due to her unique ability to not only steal health packs, but also boost her power by using the healing they provided, for both herself and teammates. This made it common for an EMP (a powerful attack) to be used at the start of a match, which was later significantly weakened, though she still felt incredibly overpowered as a result.
3. Mercy
The Angel Becomes The Moth
Instead of associating Mercy with overwhelming power initially, one might find it surprising given her reputation. However, delving into her past competitive performances reveals numerous instances where she reigned supreme, often rising through the ranks swiftly with her unique supportive abilities.
Mercy’s debut Ultimate was particularly noteworthy, as it enabled a full team revival at the press of a button, provided the player had stealth and evasion skills reminiscent of a game of hide and seek.
The second modification greatly enhanced her ability to demonstrate her skills more effectively, making her seemingly more potent with a multi-healing beam and mobility equal to some of the most agile characters. Additionally, her capacity for reviving during battle, which could be utilized twice, paved the way for the dominance of Moth in gameplay. Although she’s been slightly weakened, her power continues to shine as both a supportive ally and an excellent choice for healing.
2. Doomfist
Practically Unbalanceable
Doomfist can essentially be summed up in a single word: Overpowering. Prior to his transformation into a tank, Doomfist was a robust damage-dealing character who could swiftly eliminate half of the other characters with a single strike and escape without any repercussions. His statistics were so inflated that they enabled players to effortlessly mow down enemy backlines, leaving them with no chance to respond.
In many matches, he consistently held the upper hand, boasting such high pick potential that it was challenging to select any other champion. He underwent numerous balance adjustments and eventually transformed into a tank character. Although he’s not as powerful as before, Doomfist remains an incredibly formidable character who can singlehandedly win games if played skillfully.
1. Brigitte
A Never-Ending Nightmare
When considering characters who are excessively strong, there’s one that truly shines amongst the others – Brigitte. For more than a year, she was a game-changer, enabling the popular “GOATS” composition to reign supreme, causing quite a bit of frustration for many players. This situation persisted until an enforced role limit finally put an end to it.
The initial release of Brigitte gave her an unmatched ability to quickly defeat characters such as Tracer with minimal player intervention and no effective countermeasures. Although multiple adjustments have been made to her abilities, making her feel more balanced, that period remains one of the darkest in the game’s history due to her overwhelming power. As a result, Brigitte holds the distinction of being the most overpowered character ever introduced to the Overwatch roster.
Brigitte’s debut allowed her to easily defeat characters like Tracer with minimal player effort and no defense, earning her the title of the most overpowered character in Overwatch history. Although she has been balanced out since then, that time period still stands as one of the game’s darkest due to her overwhelming power.
In a more conversational tone:
When Brigitte first joined the Overwatch team, she was unstoppable against characters like Tracer with just a few button presses from players. This made her the most powerful character ever in the game. Even though she’s been balanced out since then, that period will always be remembered as one of the toughest times for the game because of how overpowered Brigitte was.
