Here’s a look at some of their most outstanding games – titles that were almost flawless when they first came out and still hold up incredibly well today, with only minor issues. We’ll focus on games published or created by Sony’s own studios.

I loved exploring all the different locations – they were really well done and varied. Plus, the cars looked incredible, and the sound really pulled me in. It genuinely showed off everything the PS2 could do when it first came out.

Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal

Finishing A Trilogy

Ratchet & Clank: Up Your Arsenal concluded the original trilogy with even more intense action. Similar to the previous game, players could enhance Ratchet’s abilities and upgrade his weapons using RPG-style elements. By using weapons repeatedly, even a basic gun could become incredibly powerful – almost like a rocket launcher – and discovering each new upgrade was always exciting.

The game featured a lot of creative weapons, like the Qwack-O-Ray, which hilariously turned enemies into ducks. It had the expected diverse planets and a good sense of humor. Overall, it’s a fantastic platformer for the PlayStation 2, but it’s sadly difficult to play today, even though the developers, Insomniac, are now owned by Sony.

Journey

Beyond Words

The game Journey is best experienced firsthand, and it’s short enough – only about two hours long – that anyone can find the time to play it. Originally released for the PlayStation 3 in 2012, it’s now available on other platforms as well.

I’m really captivated by the core idea of this game. You play as this lone wanderer dressed in red, trekking across a desert, and occasionally you’ll randomly encounter another player doing the same thing. What’s so cool is you can’t even talk to each other! It’s like being ships passing in the night – you just meet, help each other out as best you can, and then continue on your separate journeys. It’s a really unique and touching experience.

The Last Of Us

Uncharted Territory

The Last of Us is a truly exceptional horror game, offering a compelling story that sets a new standard for the genre. Even just the beginning of the game is a masterpiece, from the gradual build-up to the outbreak and the emotional events surrounding Joel and his daughter.

This game delivers a harsh and impactful experience, constantly reminding players of the bleakness of its post-apocalyptic world. However, it’s visually stunning, with nature beautifully reclaiming the ruins of civilization. Excellent writing, a consistently strong atmosphere, well-executed stealth and shooting, and a knack for unexpected twists make this a standout title, especially for the PS3 and later consoles.

Bloodborne

Castlevania Reborn

Bloodborne is a unique entry in FromSoftware’s collection of challenging action games. While it shares similarities with Castlevania in its gothic fantasy setting, it’s known for being much more intense and unforgiving in its combat.

The game’s connected areas and the constant feeling of fear really boosted the horror. A standout feature was the weapon transformation system – the Kirk Hammer, for example, let you turn a simple sword into a powerful hammer. It’s too bad this game, originally released on PS4, isn’t available on other platforms yet.

God Of War (2018)

Lone Wolf And Cub

The God of War series has always been known for its incredible action and compelling stories, starting with the original PlayStation 2 games. However, the 2018 God of War really elevated the franchise. This installment showed Kratos trying to change his ways and be a better father to his son, Atreus, but his troubled past continued to haunt him, even in a new world filled with gods.

The fighting felt as intense as previous games, but with a more powerful impact, reflecting Kratos’ increased size and strength. The world of Norse mythology was beautifully designed, the characters were compelling, and the Leviathan Axe offered a satisfying and unique combat experience – it was both effective for close-range attacks and fun to throw at enemies.

Shadow Of The Colossus (2018)

There Might Be Giants

Originally created for the PlayStation 2 and later remastered for the PS3, Shadow of the Colossus received a near-identical remake in 2018. Beyond its impressive scope, this updated version is the best way to experience the game on PS4, offering significantly improved graphics and controls.

Okay, so the main game is just incredible. You play as this warrior, Wander, riding around a huge, empty world, and your whole goal is to take down these massive creatures called Colossi. Each Colossus fight feels totally unique – you can’t just rush in! You have to figure out how to climb them, find their weak spots, and then, well, absorb their power. There are other games with big boss fights now, but honestly, Shadow of the Colossus was the first to really nail that feeling.

Astro Bot is a fantastic 3D platformer that both celebrates classic PlayStation games and offers a fresh, creative experience. Players control the Astro Bot as he journeys through imaginative worlds packed with platforming challenges. Throughout his adventure, he’ll rescue other bots, ranging from standard models to those cleverly designed after iconic characters from games like Castlevania and Resident Evil.

A standout feature lets you play as classic characters—but as robots—in levels designed around their original games. Each level feels unique, like a fast-paced action scene inspired by God of War or the playful monkey chase from Ape Escape. Full of unexpected moments, Astro Bot perfectly captures the feeling of classic games on the PS5.

Death Stranding 2: On The Beach

Kojima And Beyond

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach is a significant step up from the first game and a fantastic experience for PlayStation 5 owners. The graphics are stunning, the story, while still unusual, feels more focused, and completing deliveries is much smoother and easier.

While the game’s open-world versions of Mexico and Australia aren’t packed with things to do like some other games, finding secret spots feels really satisfying. The online multiplayer still works in the background, letting players work together to improve the game world for everyone. It’s a great feeling when you happen upon a road or shelter someone else built just when you need it. With Hideo Kojima’s involvement, this game represents the best of what PlayStation has to offer right now.
