Summary
- Character stubbornness in Bleach leads to severe consequences and steadfast dedication to personal beliefs.
- Ulquiorra, Riruka, Jugram, Grimmjow, Uryu, Yhwach, Aizen, and Ichigo all exhibit extreme stubbornness.
- Stubbornness in characters like Ichigo can be both a blessing and a curse, leading to ultimate triumphs and devastating losses.
Characters who are known for being steadfast often cling firmly to their opinions, emotions, and values, even when faced with contradictory evidence from others. This trait is noticeable in several characters across the Bleach series, and while it can lead these individuals into difficult situations at times, it has also proven beneficial for those who refuse to waver in their convictions and resolve despite external pressures.
Some of these characters have endured brutal beatings due to their unyielding nature, and they persist in the face of seemingly certain death following a fierce fight. In essence, attempting to reason with these characters can seem like an exercise in futility, but it is these particular characters listed below who have demonstrated remarkable tenacity within the entire cast of Bleach.
8. Ulquiorra Cifer
Ulquiorra’s Hopelessness Makes It Difficult For Him To Understand The Concepts Of Hope And Friendship
- First Appearance: Episode 113
Ulquiorra is a member of the Espada, embodying the idea of emptiness or nothingness. This perspective shapes his outlook on life and others as rather pessimistic. As he keeps vigil over Orihime, Ulquiorra finds himself perplexed by her persistent faith that her friends will rescue her, for his philosophy discourages such optimistic thoughts and values.
Ulquiorra clings tightly to his personal beliefs, but gradually, his inflexibility erodes as he comes to understand the essence of compassion. However, it took an extended period for this change to occur, as throughout most of the narrative, he adamantly rejected the notion that abstract concepts such as optimism and camaraderie held any significance whatsoever. This perspective shifted dramatically in the final stages of his life.
7. Riruka Dokugamine
The Bubbly Fullbringer Will Do All She Can To Hide Her True Feelings And Childish Personality
- First Appearance: Episode 343
Ever since I first crossed paths with Ichigo during the Fullbring arc, it’s been glaringly obvious that I harbor deep feelings for him. Yet, instead of expressing my emotions or attempting to get closer to him, I maintain an aloof and professional demeanor, much like the rest of our group – all while secretly being smitten by any adorable thing I come across.
At times, Riruka has come close to revealing her real emotions, like when she and Ichigo are on their way to the Royal Palace, where she makes an effort to maintain a serious expression without blushing. However, it’s clear that she remains determined not to show her true feelings openly, even if she secretly yearns to do so.
6. Jugram Haschwalt
Haschwalt’s Stubborn Dedication To Yhwach Causes Him To Kill His Own Best Friend
- First Appearance: TYBW Episode 2
In his difficult childhood marked by an abusive uncle and restricted Quincy abilities, Haschwalt’s life was far from easy. Although he agreed with his childhood friend Bazz-B that they would unite to defeat Yhwach, Haschwalt surprisingly chose a different path and allied himself with the Quincy King, who offered him an escape from his bleak circumstances.
As a devoted fan, it’s no wonder Haschwalt found himself idolizing Yhwach, viewing him as a new guiding figure. However, his unyielding devotion and stubbornness led him astray onto a treacherous path. Regrettably, Haschwalt took the life of Bazz-B, who tried to steer him back on track. Towards the series’ end, after absorbing the Almighty, Haschwalt’s mind fell under darkness. Unlike the other Sternritter who started to doubt Yhwach’s principles and intentions, Haschwalt resisted any attempts to sway his convictions.
5. Grimmjow Jaegerjaquez
No Matter How Many Times He’s Beat By Ichigo, Grimmjow Still Sees Himself As The King
- First Appearance: Episode 116
Characters who lose against Ichigo in battle usually concede defeat and move forward, except for Grimmjow. This member of Aizen’s Espada army persists in thinking he is a better fighter than his rival, even after being embarrassed at the culmination of their second fight in Hueco Mundo.
When Grimmjow reappears during the Thousand-Year Blood War, he adopts an arrogant and self-assured demeanor towards Ichigo, implying that they will soon have another confrontation where Grimmjow can demonstrate his superiority. Grimmjow’s unyielding nature is rooted in his past as a ruler, who believes that he should always be at the pinnacle of the hierarchy, regardless of any circumstances.
4. Uryu Ishida
Uryu’s Unwillingness To Tell The Others About His Plan Almost Got Many Of His Friends Killed
- First Appearance: Episode 7
In the final arc of the series known as the Thousand-Year Blood War, Uryu takes on a double role, betraying his friends in order to get near Yhwach for the ultimate goal of defeating him once and for all. Despite several chances to reveal his intentions, he not only remains silent but even aggressively attacks former allies, keeping his true objectives hidden. This is particularly evident in the anime version where additional scenes are included.
Instead of revealing his intentions immediately, he waited until after he had killed Senjumaru, putting both Ichigo and Renji’s lives at risk later on. This secretive behavior allowed him to maintain an air of mystery around his motives, but it ultimately led to unnecessary pain and hardship that could have been avoided with earlier disclosure.
3. Yhwach
Yhwach Will Do Literally Whatever It Takes To Merge The Three Worlds, Even If It Means Sacrificing His Entire Army
- First Appearance: TYBW Episode 1
Yhwach, ruler of the Quincies and commander of the Sternritter, intends to overthrow the Soul King in order to combine the three realms, thereby alleviating the universe of all pain and suffering entirely. To accomplish this ambitious goal, Yhwach resorts to drastic measures, such as launching attacks on the Soul Society twice, controlling Ichigo, and even losing nearly his entire army to rejuvenate his life force through the Auswahlen.
In episode 24 of the TYBW anime, I discovered that Ichibe had attempted to reason with Yhwach against the invasion, not just him but others too, aiming to awaken the Quincy from their slumber. However, no matter the doubters, even those closest to him, Yhwach has consistently stayed committed to his mission and was prepared to annihilate anyone who dared challenge his beliefs.
2. Sosuke Aizen
Nobody Could Shake Aizen Of His Belief That Killing The Soul King Is The Way Forward
- First Appearance: Episode 23
Initially, when Aizen revealed his true intentions and abandoned the Soul Society, none – not even those high-ranking Captains who had stood by him for so long – could dissuade him from his grand scheme. Aizen’s ambition was to essentially destroy the Soul King and create a new world, a move that would have catastrophic consequences if he were to rule the three realms. Remarkably, Aizen never wavered in his convictions or questioned his own thoughts throughout this process.
In the final moments of his battle against Ichigo, Aizen still proclaimed that everyone else was weak for failing to embrace his philosophy, despite being imprisoned by Urahara. Even following his defeat, Aizen maintained a belief in his own divinity, clinging to this notion throughout the remainder of his life.
1. Ichigo Kurosaki
Ichigo’s Proud And Stubborn Nature Is Both A Blessing And A Curse For The Protagonist
- First Appearance: Episode 1
When Ichigo is determined about a course of action, he persists with it regardless of how risky or perilous it may seem. This becomes evident right from the start of the series when Ichigo chooses to storm into the Soul Society and blatantly disregard all its rules, solely to save Rukia. Despite being repeatedly cautioned that such actions could have cost him his life, he pressed on.
In another wording: Ichigo’s unyielding personality is evident not only in everyday life but also in his battles. He persistently rises again and again to secure victory over adversaries. This tenacious attitude often serves him well when faced with tough situations, preventing him from giving up. However, it has led to disastrous consequences on some occasions, such as his transformation into a violent Vasto Lorde while fighting Ulquiorra, resulting in his apparent death. Despite these setbacks, Ichigo’s pride and determination have allowed him to defeat some of the most powerful characters within the world of Bleach, making it both a source of strength and a potential source of danger on other occasions.
