Summary
- Demons in Demon Slayer are transformed by Muzan, and some earn sympathy despite their violent tendencies.
- Seven demons are ranked based on sympathy levels, including Akaza and Yushiro.
- Notable sympathetic demons include Nezuko, who resists violent urges, and Tamayo, who is dedicated to helping others.
In the anime titled “Demon Slayer“, the demons portrayed are ravenous entities that consume any human they come across. The reason behind this is that most demons have lost their cognitive abilities following Muzan’s transformation, leaving them in a state of insatiable hunger. However, it’s worth noting that there exists a few demons who have mastered overcoming their violent nature and regaining self-control regarding their bloodlust.
Despite their necessity to subsist on blood and meat, these characters from the “Demon Slayer” series lead lives drastically distinct from other demons portrayed. Given their tragic histories, it’s not far-fetched to empathize with them, despite their demonic nature. With this in mind, I present the 7 most pitiable demons in “Demon Slayer,” rated according to the degree of sympathy they elicit:
1. Gyutaro and Daki: As siblings bound by blood oaths, these fearsome demons have a complex dynamic that invites contemplation. Their past is shrouded in mystery, but their bond and tragic circumstances make them captivating characters.
2. Akaza: Loyal to Muzan Kibutsuji, the main antagonist, Akaza struggles with his own feelings of loyalty and obedience versus his desire for freedom. His unwavering devotion to his master adds depth to his character and makes him a sympathetic figure despite being a powerful demon.
3. Tanjirou’s sister Nezuko: Though not technically a “demon,” Nezuko’s transformation into a demonic state and her struggle to regain her humanity make her one of the most sympathetic characters in the series. Her bond with her brother, Tanjirou, further underscores her emotional appeal.
4. Giyu Tomioka: Once an emotionless and cold-hearted demon slayer, Giyu’s backstory reveals a deeply troubled and emotionally scarred individual. His journey towards self-discovery and redemption makes him a sympathetic character that audiences can relate to.
5. Muzan Kibutsuji: The main antagonist of the series, Muzan’s origins and motivations are gradually revealed over time, making him a complex and sympathetic figure despite his evil deeds. His struggle against his own immortality and desire for power make him an intriguing character that invites contemplation.
6. Shinobu Kocho: The smallest and weakest member of the Demon Slayer Corps, Shinobu is a kind-hearted and gentle individual who struggles with her own inner demons, both literally and metaphorically. Her struggle to maintain a semblance of normalcy in her demonic state adds depth to her character and makes her a sympathetic figure.
7. Rengoku Kyoujuro: A skilled and honorable demon slayer, Rengoku is deeply committed to his mission of eradicating demons. However, his tragic past and untimely death make him a pitiable figure that audiences can empathize with. His unwavering dedication to his cause and his willingness to sacrifice himself for the greater good make him a sympathetic character that leaves a lasting impact on readers.
As I glance around, I note that the items on my mental checklist vary greatly from what you might find. My perspective, unique to me, shapes the things I prioritize and deem essential.
7. Akaza
The Pure Fighter
- Japanese VA: Akira Ishida
- First Appearance: Kimetsu no Yaiba: The Movie – Mugen Train
Reflecting on Akaza being a prominent and menacing member of the Twelve Kizuki, responsible for the demise of one of the cherished characters in the series, it may initially seem unusual to empathize with him. However, upon examining his character and actions more closely, one might find it less unbelievable than first thought.
Akaza is quite fond of battles, there’s no denying that. He derives satisfaction from challenging formidable opponents and considers himself superior to those less powerful. However, he never resorts to violence merely for amusement. He also refrains from consuming humans unless it’s absolutely necessary. The forthcoming Infinity Castle arc promises to delve into his sorrowful past, details of which we won’t reveal here. Suffice it to say that his ambition to surpass everyone else stems from a desire to safeguard all he holds dear. Though many may find issue with some of his actions, they can at least understand the rationale behind them.
6. Kyogai
The Depressed Demon
- Japanese VA: Junichi Suwabe
- First Appearance: Episode 11
Instead of the commonly boisterous and crass demons, Kyogai stands out as more reserved and tranquil. He seldom resorts to shouting, even in moments of irritation, and finds unannounced visits impolite. Yet, what truly irks him is his inability to grow stronger, despite having received the blessing from his master, Muzan Kibutsuji.
Kyogai’s inability to meet his master’s standards and his past life as an unsuccessful artist left him overwhelmed with sadness. In truth, one could say that Kyogai is deeply depressed. Although it may seem unusual, a depressed demon like Kyogai exists. Many can relate to the agony of failing to live up to someone we admire, so despite being a demon, empathy for Kyogai in this context is not difficult to find.
5. Spider Demon (Daughter)
The Cowardly Demon
- Japanese VA: Ryoko Shiraishi
- First Appearance: Episode 16
I find myself captivated by the exceptional Spider Demon clan. What sets them apart isn’t just their unusual habit of hunting together, which is quite uncommon among demons, but also their unique bond – they aren’t truly a family in the traditional sense. Instead, they are an ensemble of demons who have been bound together by Rui, the Lower Rank Five of the Twelve Kizuki, and though they may not know each other well, circumstance has forced us to share this unconventional familial connection. I am but one of these demons, unwillingly part of Rui’s fabricated family.
Within the pseudospider family, the youngest member is notably timid. She’s well aware of Rui’s malevolent and frightening nature, yet feels compelled to obey his orders due to his superior strength. Witnessing daily acts of cruelty by both Rui and their fictitious father towards their fictitious mother leaves her feeling powerless, a situation that undoubtedly warrants empathy.
4. Spider Demon (Mother)
The Helpless Demon
- Japanese VA: Ami Koshimizu
- First Appearance: Episode 15
Similar to the rest of Rui’s “pseudo-family”, the being referred to as the “Mother” was compelled by him into this maternal role. Interestingly, this Mother figure happens to be the youngest member of the group, which makes it challenging for her to effectively carry out the responsibilities of a mother in their contrived family setup.
Her youth within the family makes her the most vulnerable, leading Rui and their father to mistreat her frequently. Contrastingly, the mother, in her demonic form altered by time, takes pleasure in inflicting pain and devouring harmless individuals. However, prior to this transformation that occurred during her childhood, she was a more benevolent and innocent demoness. Though she has perpetrated acts of cruelty, these are primarily driven by the need to endure. Despite this, she continues to be victimized, with no one stepping forward to aid her. At the very least, we can extend her some empathy.
In the family, being the youngest leaves her as the weakest and frequently abused by Rui and their father. The mother, in a demonic form changed over time, finds joy in inflicting harm on innocent people. Prior to this transformation during her childhood, she was kinder and more innocent. Though cruel actions are a result of survival, she is still victimized with no help. A minimal amount of sympathy is what she deserves.
3. Yushiro
The Lovesick Demon
- Japanese VA: Daiki Yamashita
- First Appearance: Episode 8
the option to become a demon. And it was this offer that he accepted.
Since that point forward, Yushiro has been serving as Tamayo’s devoted aid. It’s true that gratitude isn’t the sole motivation behind his loyalty towards Tamayo. In fact, Yushiro is deeply in love with Tamayo, whom he considers his savior. As a result, he is well-versed in every aspect of Tomoyo’s life-her regrets, her battles, her animosity, her life’s mission, everything. From living as a demon, to assisting with Tomoyo’s challenging research, to loving someone who he knows can’t reciprocate his feelings, Yushiro has experienced a wide range of emotions in his immortal existence. The young demon, burdened by these complex feelings, certainly evokes a sense of compassion.
2. Nezuko Kamado
The Stubborn Demon
- Japanese VA: Akari Kitou
- First Appearance: Episode 1
In the world of Demon Slayer, Nezuko Kamado is unique among demons as she successfully resists the innate compulsion towards violence and insatiable hunger for blood and flesh that typically afflicts her demonic kin. Remarkably, this self-control isn’t temporary – it endures throughout the entire series.
Remarkably, Nezuko remains in her demonic state throughout the narrative. Unlike other demons mentioned here, she’s unable to converse conventionally and recalls very little of her human life. Yet, even in this condition, she offers comfort by patting Zenitsu when he’s down and motivating Tanjiro during tough times. Her compassion remains intact, despite losing control over her mind and body. She deserves not just our sympathy but unwavering support beyond measure.
1. Tamayo
The Most Humane Demon
- Japanese VA: Maaya Sakamoto
- First Appearance: Episode 8
When considering compassionate demons, the name that readily springs to mind is Lady Tamayo, who devoted her existence to discovering a remedy that would transform demons into humans once more, effectively undoing Muzan’s work spanning over millennia.
Throughout countless years, even before the narrative begins in Demon Slayer, Lady Tamayo has tirelessly worked to aid victims of Muzan’s demonification. Her efforts are not just physical, as she sheds blood, sweat, and tears in her relentless pursuit to help, but also emotional as she comforts the grieving families. Her dedication spans hundreds of years, making her a truly inspiring figure who warrants more than mere sympathy or support – Lady Tamayo is a character deserving of our utmost admiration in Demon Slayer.
