Summary
- The image of witches has evolved from devil worshipers to pointy hat-wearers, but their dark roots persist.
- Witches in horror games range from demonic to revenge-driven, embodying sinister stereotypes.
- From a psychological horror walking simulator to an endless runner boss, witches in games provide scares.
The depiction of a witch has transformed dramatically through time; a character once depicted as a seductive worshipper of the devil is now frequently shown in modern media as either someone wearing a pointy hat or an ordinary high school student learning magic. While their on-screen and off-screen importance is captivating, it’s crucial to remember that witchcraft originates from dark practices, and these are not exclusively associated with the persecution of women, particularly during the Salem Witch Trials.
Modern days might still harbor individuals labeled as witches, often linked to paganism. The image of malevolent practitioners of dark magic, a stereotype deeply rooted, persists even in today’s horror literature and games. Herein lies a collection of some frightening witches from horror video games, ranging from the menacingly demonic to the enraged seekers of vengeance.

9. Elderly Woman (Witch’s Doll)
Nurtures A Sinister Presence
- Platform: Windows
- Release Date: May 24, 2024
- Developer: Elite Lords Studio
In simpler terms, “Witch’s Doll” is a psychological horror/exploration game. The player assumes the identity of a young writer who has just moved into an inexpensive yet suspicious apartment. As time passes, they come to realize that a witch inhabits the building, manipulating the tenants to revive her daughter. Unbeknownst to everyone, they are unwittingly nourishing something far more sinister.
Although the game abounds with typical tropes like mannequins, jump scares, and troublesome flashlight deaths, the title “Witch’s Doll” still offers a substantial amount of surprising twists. What makes this game particularly chilling is the extreme measures a grieving and protective mother takes in her desperation, a theme that truly sends shivers down one’s spine.
8. Bethany Covenant (Clive Barker’s Undying)
The Penultimate Boss Of An Underrated Horror FPS
Clive Barker, a renowned English author in the horror genre, is primarily recognized for his written works and movies, particularly the famous “Hellraiser”. Yet, what frequently goes unnoticed are his significant contributions to video games. One such game is “Clive Barker’s Undying”, a first-person shooter that guides the character Patrick Galloway through 1920s Ireland, where he assists a family whose dabbling in the supernatural has led to tragic consequences.
Bethany is a member of the Covenant family who bears a curse. Once an earth magician, she’s now reborn as a demon witch, commanding her own domain and determined to annihilate Patrick. Although Undying may not be the scariest in its genre due to its age, it certainly boasts some genuinely chilling and fear-provoking monster concepts, largely influenced by Lovecraft.
7. The Witch (Evil Dead: Endless Nightmare)
A Memorable Undead Foe
- Platform: Android, iOS
- Release Date: October 20, 2016
- Developer: Boomdash Digital
As a hardcore gamer, diving into the thrilling world of “Evil Dead: Endless Nightmares” is like stepping into my very own nightmare. It’s an endless runner that echoes the spine-chilling remake of Fede Alvarez’s Evil Dead movie. The journey begins in a creepy shed, and it’s up to me to survive the haunted woods as long as I can, battling demons, Deadites, and whatever else lurks in the darkness. Along the way, I’ll stumble upon new weapons and power-ups that will help me stay alive, making each step a fight for my very survival!
The Witch is a formidable foe, called upon once you’ve gathered all five pieces of the “Book of the Dead”. This boss towers over you with gnarled branch-like extensions and a tentacle-adorned arm. In this action-horror game, The Witch seems more conquerable, but her ominous and unsettling appearance remains undeniable.
Evil Dead: Endless Nightmares is no longer available on Google Play or the App Store.
6. The Witch (Shhh!)
She Can Hear Everything
- Platform: Windows
- Release Date: December 11, 2023
- Developer: 616 Games
Games that incorporate player’s microphones can create a truly chilling experience, enhancing the suspense within the gameplay. For instance, “Shhh!”, a game where players recreate found footage scenarios across various locations while maintaining silence, becomes particularly terrifying. This is challenging when sudden jump scares occur intermittently.
One of the available tapes to play is titled “The Witching Woods,” set within a forest that carries the chilling tale of a malevolent witch who supposedly dwells there. The eerie depiction of the witch, with her spooky laughter and whispers echoing through the shadows cast by the trees, undeniably gives off an unsettling vibe.
5. Baba Yaga (Don’t Knock Twice)
The Urban Legend Might Just Be True
- Platform: Windows
- Release Date: September 5, 2017
- Developer: Wales Interactive
Based on the 2016 movie titled “Don’t Knock Twice”, the story follows an artist named Jessica who receives temporary custody of her daughter, Chloe. Unfortunately, it is revealed that Chloe has inadvertently summoned a wicked witch, known as Baba Yaga, and Jessica must now confront more than just the challenges in her relationship with her daughter.
In this house, the protagonist needs to locate specific objects to gain entry into Baba Yaga’s realm with the goal of rescuing Chloe. Known for her menacing presence in folklore, Baba Yaga is often found skulking in the darkness, always seeming to be watching the player from behind. Essentially, the game Don’t Knock Twice is skillfully designed, utilizing sound and evolving settings to genuinely spook the player.
4. Ellen (The Witch’s House MV)
An Unexpectedly Wicked Character
As I eagerly delved into the charming pixelated world of “The Witch’s House MV,” it didn’t take long for the idyllic facade to crumble, revealing a 2D realm shrouded in dread. In this chilling tale, I found myself playing as Viola, a young girl who finds herself lost in a forest and yearning for escape. Seeking solace in a nearby mansion, I was swiftly met with lethal traps and enigmatic puzzles that hinted at something far more ominous lurking beneath the surface.
In this story, we meet Ellen, the young resident of the mansion who, as a talking cat suggests, has a past marked by illness and negligence. At first glance, Ellen seems compassionate, but soon it becomes clear that her innocence is merely an illusion. Although she may not be visually frightening, it’s Ellen’s readiness to perform wicked deeds that sends shivers down the spine.
3. The Hag (Dead By Daylight)
The Vengeful Witch Of The Swamp
In simpler terms, “Dead By Daylight” is an asymmetrical horror video game where players can either play as survivors attempting to escape or as a killer trying to catch them and offer them to a supernatural being known as the Entity. Since its launch, “Dead By Daylight” has introduced numerous expansions and downloadable content that provide thrilling gameplay experiences. One of the formidable killers in Backwater Swamp is called “The Hag,” also known colloquially as the Witch.
Originally named Lisa Sherwood, she underwent a harrowing ordeal when she was kidnapped, tortured, and left for dead after an accident in the forest. Employing mystical symbols she learned as a child, she managed to retaliate and break free from her captors. Now, with a vengeful spirit burning within her, she sets out to annihilate anyone who stands against her. Dirty, battered, and merciless, any run-ins with the Witch are sure to be chilling experiences.
The Hag was introduced in the Of Flesh and Mud DLC, and is available in the game store.
2. Young Woman (Befriended Curse)
Players Will Feel Like They’re Being Watched At All Times
- Platform: Windows
- Release Date: July 30, 2024
- Developer: Yellow Basement Games
In “Befriended Curse”, the player assumes the identity of a summer psychology intern tasked with helping a mother and daughter mend their bond. However, it quickly unfolds that this task is more complex than expected, as the player uncovers a deeper mission: to free the girl from an old witch’s curse that dates back to 1492.
In the game “Befriended Curse,” the witch character is disquieting, frequently manifesting in the darkness as a pair of glowing eyes or as a shadow lurking in the room’s corners. Among horror walk-through games, this one stands out for its tense and well-timed pacing, offering a story that delves into the history of witchcraft with a certain poignancy.
1. The Blair Witch (Blair Witch)
Manages To Be Terrifying Without Making An Appearance, Just Like Its Film Counterpart
In Black Hills Forest, a young lad mysteriously disappears. Previously retired police officer Ellis, accompanied by his canine companion Bullet, embarks on a search mission. However, they soon discover that the situation is far more sinister than anticipated. The game’s protagonist will traverse the forest to uncover hints leading to the missing boy while confronting Ellis’s troubled past and the malevolent entities hidden within the woods. Filled with brain-teasing puzzles, intense combat sequences, and a fresh take on the movie’s original setting, Blair Witch promises an immersive journey.
As a devoted fan, I must say, the brilliance of Blair Witch lies in its chilling capacity to instill fear without even showing the witch herself. Yet, her mysterious absence doesn’t lessen her control over the forest; instead, it intensifies, with her disembodied voice and spectral figures hidden amongst the trees serving as reminders of her omnipresence. The way the Blair Witch manipulates her victims is a truly petrifying idea that keeps me on the edge of my seat throughout the game’s entirety.
