The MSI Claw 8 AI+ Key Specs Have Been Leaked: Here's What We Know

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the upcoming MSI Claw 8 AI+ has me intrigued. The promise of improved hardware and battery life is music to my ears (or eyes, rather). If you remember the Claw A1M, it was a bit of a letdown, but MSI seems determined to make amends with this new model.

MSI has been secretly developing the successor to its less-than-popular handheld gaming device, the Claw A1M, for its debut at CES 2025. While some industry insiders have caught a glimpse, the specifications of the upcoming Claw 8 AI+ have largely remained hidden. However, the official CES website has disclosed a few essential details about this forthcoming handheld device. The MSI Claw 8 AI+ is expected to run on an Intel Lunar Lake processor and boast over four hours of uninterrupted AAA gaming.

The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) commences on January 7, 2025, and the event’s official site is now displaying the attendees. Among them, MSI will exhibit fresh hardware, featuring the MSI Claw 8 AI+ portable gaming console that was previously hinted at. This will be MSI’s second endeavor in this design, with lessons learned from the MSI Claw A1M influencing the new device. The upcoming handheld gaming console is expected to run on an Intel Core Ultra 7 200-series processor with second generation Arc Graphics, marking a significant upgrade over its predecessor.

The CES listing indicates that the MSI Claw 8 AI+ will operate on Windows 11 and boast a compute power of approximately 48 TOPS. Previous speculations for IFA 2024 suggested a large battery capacity, estimated at 80Wh; however, the CES listing reveals an even larger 82Wh battery capacity that promises gaming sessions lasting over four hours with AAA titles. Although this claim is somewhat imprecise and many factors influence battery life, the enhanced efficiency of the new chip in conjunction with a substantial 82Wh battery should result in an extended gaming experience.

The device under consideration is expected to feature a display of approximately 8 inches, potentially boasting a fast refresh rate of up to 144Hz (as the MSI Claw 8 AI+ may share this feature with the Lenovo Legion Go). It’s also worth mentioning that the RAM options could include 16GB and 32GB versions, although further details on specific variants will be shared at a later time, closer to the product launch.

For reference, the MSI Claw A1M is powered by up to an Intel Core Ultra 7 155H processor, Arc graphics, a 53Wh battery, and a 7-inch 1080p display. It has a Thunderbolt 4 port, but it is unclear if the new MSI Claw 8 AI+ will bring a Thunderbolt 5 port or stick with Thunderbolt 4. The Claw A1M launched at $700 for the Core Ultra 5 135H with 512GB storage model, $750 for the Core Ultra 7 155H model with 512GB storage, and $800 for the Core Ultra 7 with 1TB model.

The cost matches up with similar handheld gaming devices such as the ROG Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go. At this time, we don’t know what the price for the MSI Claw 8 AI+ will be; it remains to be seen if it will have a significant increase over the initial Claw model. There’s also a chance that MSI could offer the Claw 8 AI+ at a lower price compared to competitors.
