The Music of Atomfall Evolves

In the upcoming game titled “Atomfall,” players are taken to a fictionalized version of Britain’s Lake District, which has been drastically altered following the Windscale disaster. This quarantine zone serves as the game’s setting. Within this zone, players can collect items, negotiate with non-player characters, align with or challenge various factions, and ultimately make their way to the Windscale facility to uncover the truth behind the incident. The soundtrack in “Atomfall” changes dynamically, incorporating a variety of musical influences for an immersive experience.

In my gaming world, I had a chat with Graham Gatheral, the audio director of Atomfall, about crafting its dynamic soundtrack. He shared that the initial focus was on establishing a comforting, familiar atmosphere for traversing a tranquil English countryside at the game’s outset. However, as players unravel the enigmas hidden within Atomfall – like the secrets surrounding the Windscale incident and encounter more characters and factions – the soundtrack subtly transforms to reflect this newly acquired knowledge, growing increasingly strange to emphasize the unsettling nature of these revelations.

Atomfall’s Soundtrack Begins With Normalcy, Then Embraces The Bizarre

According to Gatheral, one of our main objectives was to create a familiar feel at the beginning of the game, Atomfall. He elaborated that the initial soundtrack uses traditional instruments and sounds like orchestral and string-based pieces. However, as players uncover the game’s secrets, the music becomes increasingly unsettling and integrates electronic elements, reflecting Atomfall‘s folk horror and science fiction influences. Gatheral characterized the later-game soundtrack as incorporating these darker and more technological tones.

As the explorer delves further into the strange environment, we gradually incorporate unusual soundscapes (electronic tones, irregular rhythms, uncommon instruments) to mirror the intensifying strangeness and enhance the atmosphere of mystery and discomfort that characterizes Atomfall’s world.

The game, titled “Atomfall,” relies heavily on player decisions rather than conventional quests or waypoints. Instead of following a linear path, players encounter Leads, which serve as key points to investigate and interact with the world. A central enigma, known as the Windscale incident, forms the backbone of the storyline. This mystery involves uncovering what caused the incident, its impact on the world, and the true nature behind it.

As players delve deeper into this mystery, the game’s soundtrack will adapt dynamically, intensifying the feeling of unease and emphasizing that despite some areas in the quarantine zone resembling picturesque English countryside, there are unsettling anomalies at play.

Music Is Used To Distinguish The Game’s Various Factions

For five years, the quarantine zone of Atomfall has been isolated from the global community, leading to the emergence of several factions vying for power and influence within this sealed-off region. An amnesiac protagonist can choose to align with or challenge these groups as they come across them. Among them are Protocol, a government reaction unit, the Druids whose beliefs border on folk horror, the British Atomic Research Division (BARD), and numerous others. Additionally, there may be science fiction-inspired creatures, reminiscent of Doctor Who stories, that could pose potential threats.

The game separates these factions by giving them unique melodies and allowing the soundtrack to shift and progress based on whom the players align with and where their allegiance is ultimately directed. As per Gatheral, the faction’s musical themes showcase Atomfall‘s diverse inspirations, such as outlaw culture and military power, cultist practices, and sci-fi futurism.

In the realm of Atomfall, you’ll find a world brimming with unexpected twists. One moment you might find yourself raising a glass at the local tavern with friends, and the next, you’re immersed in a nail-biting nuclear enigma. The game’s music is meticulously crafted to echo this blend of ordinary and extraordinary, smoothly transitioning from comforting string melodies to more unconventional instruments and electronic tunes. Regardless of the path players choose in this decision-driven game, the soundtrack of Atomfall will make a perfect companion for their adventure.
