The Next Battlefield Can Have Its Cake and Eat It Too

Highlights

  • The next Battlefield game must balance realism with light-hearted humor to satisfy fans’ desires for historical accuracy and eccentricity.
  • Fans hope the next Battlefield campaign will bring back the beloved Bad Company vibes with comedic and rule-breaking soldier personas.
  • Multiplayer in the next Battlefield should focus on realism, featuring historically accurate weapons and immersive environments for an authentic experience.

As a longtime Battlefield fanatic with countless hours spent in virtual battlefields across eras, I can confidently say that the upcoming Battlefield game needs to be a masterpiece that caters to both the purists and the unconventional fans of this iconic franchise.

In recent times, the Battlefield series has been grappling with an identity dilemma. Initially, when Battlefield was introduced in the early 2000s, it was recognized for its role as a multiplayer military shooter with a touch of authentic historical realism. This core identity persisted throughout the first ten years of its existence, with an earthy ambiance dominating each release until the launch of Battlefield 1 in 2016. The subsequent games, Battlefield V and 2042, however, deviated from the franchise’s traditional realism and earthy tone, incorporating elements like the Specialist system in 2042 that didn’t align perfectly with the series’ previous identity.

Consequently, the upcoming Battlefield game must strike a balance in its tone to satisfy all fans. Some eagerly await a revival of the series’ realistic and historically authentic aspect, while others hope for an infusion of the franchise’s fantastical or whimsical elements. However, it’s possible that the next Battlefield could cater to both preferences at once.

The Next Battlefield Can Deliver Both Fan-Requested Tones At Once

The Next Battlefield’s Campaign Can Have Bad Company Vibes

Despite the fact that games like Battlefield 3, 4, 1, and V all had captivating campaign modes centered on contemporary conflicts and anthology missions from WW1 and WW2 respectively, they don’t typically receive the highest accolades as the best Battlefield campaigns. Instead, it’s often the Battlefield: Bad Company duology that garners the most praise for its story mode, as favored by many fans.

What makes the campaigns in Battlefield: Bad Company unique compared to others in the series is their lighter, humorous tone, centered around the rebellious and mischievous soldiers from the titular team. The larger-than-life characters of these games have become a beloved aspect, and fans have long hoped for this style to return. Potentially, the next Battlefield game could fulfill this wish by presenting a more humorous or even comedic campaign that adopts the formula of Bad Company, introducing a fresh batch of over-the-top characters as heroes.

The Next Battlefield’s Multiplayer Can Strive for Realism

But while many fans would want to see a lighter tone for Battlefield‘s next campaign, many more want the Battlefield series to return to its realistic roots, which is something the next entry’s multiplayer mode could offer. The next Battlefield‘s multiplayer portion should embrace realism more so than ever before, bringing back immersive features like realistic in-game chatter between allies and impressive destruction technology. It would also be great to see a return to more historically accurate weapons, gadgets, and vehicles in the next Battlefield, or if the next entry is not set in the past, then at least weapons and vehicles that feel authentic and logical for the era.

This realism also needs to extend to the next Battlefield‘s multiplayer maps. The layout of buildings and city roads needs to feel logical, environments need to look detailed, and there should be plenty of interactive features, such as functional elevators, building interiors, and moving pieces of scenery. With a multiplayer mode that strives for realism, and a campaign mode that takes itself a bit less seriously than past entries, the next Battlefield could manage to strike a perfect balance between the two opposing tones that different parts of the fan-base want to see.
