The Next Nintendo Switch Online Game Should Open the Floodgates

Highlights

  • Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team joins Nintendo Switch Online on August 9, expanding the collection of classic Pokemon games available.
  • Despite the addition of spin-off Pokemon games, main series entries are still absent from the NSO library, leaving fans wanting more.
  • Game Boy Advance Pokemon titles like Ruby & Sapphire may be added in the future, but that remains to be seen.

As a seasoned gamer with memories of catching my first Pokémon on a Game Boy Color, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and anticipation as Nintendo Switch Online prepares to welcome Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team on August 9. It’s a step in the right direction, no doubt, but it also serves as a stark reminder that we’re still waiting for the main course – the main series Pokémon games from the Game Boy Advance era.

On August 9, the game Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team will become available on Nintendo Switch Online. It’s hoped that this could be the first of several Game Boy Advance (GBA) Pokemon games to join the subscription service. The Nintendo Switch Online offers subscribers access to numerous classic Nintendo games, hailing from some of the company’s most iconic franchises. At present, the Pokemon franchise is relatively scarce within the various tiers of the Nintendo Switch Online library.

Starting August 9, when Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team becomes available on Nintendo Switch Online, it will be the sixth Pokemon game offered in their service. Previously, they had Pokemon Trading Card Game, Pokemon Puzzle League, Pokemon Snap, Pokemon Stadium, and Pokemon Stadium 2. Notably, all the current Pokemon games on Switch Online are spin-offs; no main series games have been added yet. This may catch the attention of dedicated Pokemon fans.

It’s not clear why Nintendo hasn’t incorporated any major Pokemon games into their Nintendo Switch Online yet. Perhaps they have different strategies for the classic Pokemon titles, but we’ll have to wait and see. However, the inclusion of Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team could be a hint of future developments. It would certainly be exciting if all Game Boy Advance-era Pokemon games were added to the service!

List of Pokemon Games on Nintendo Switch Online

  • Pokemon Trading Card Game (GBC)
  • Pokemon Puzzle League (N64)
  • Pokemon Snap (N64)
  • Pokemon Stadium (N64)
  • Pokemon Stadium 2 (N64)
  • Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team (GBA) – Starting August 9

List of Pokemon Games on the Game Boy Advance

  • Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire
  • Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen
  • Pokemon Emerald
  • Pokemon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire
  • Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team

Apart from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team, the lineup of Pokemon games on Game Boy Advance also includes Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire, Pokemon FireRed and LeafGreen, Pokemon Emerald, and Pokemon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire. Given that Nintendo appears to be reluctant about bringing main series Pokemon games onto the Nintendo Switch, it seems that Pokemon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire might be the most plausible candidate for an upcoming update on Nintendo Switch Online.

It’s important to note that not every Nintendo Switch Online user can play games like Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team, as these and other Game Boy Advance titles are only available on the Expansion Pack tier of the service. Base NSO subscribers have access to just the Pokemon Trading Card Game, but this could change if classic Pokemon games are added later.
