As a lifelong Star Wars enthusiast and someone who’s spent countless hours navigating the galaxy far, far away, I can’t help but feel a tinge of disappointment that Coruscant was overlooked in Massive Entertainment’s open-world adventure, Star Wars Outlaws.
True to their word, Massive Entertainment has delivered an open-world experience for Star Wars enthusiasts in the game called Star Wars Outlaws. Unlike previous Star Wars games that adhered to a traditional level structure or Metroidvania design, this game offers players the liberty to traverse some of the franchise’s most renowned planets as they embark on an exhilarating smuggler journey. Despite the game doing justice to its depicted planets, there was one planet missing that would have added to the enjoyment.
Since the storyline of Star Wars Outlaws revolves around galaxy’s criminal organizations, it makes sense that they would reside on some of the franchise’s most renowned planets. Although it might be too late for Massive Entertainment to incorporate this now, the future criminal-centric Star Wars adventure should take Coruscant into account, given its significance.
Coruscant Should Have Been a Part of Star Wars Outlaws
Coruscant is Known for Its Criminal Side
Pretty much any Star Wars fan will recognize the planet of Coruscant and its many skyscrapers. It had a prominent role throughout the prequel trilogy, being the center of the entire Galactic Republic and the Jedi Order. Additionally, it would appear throughout Star Wars: The Clone Wars and The Bad Batch. It has also appeared in all sorts of novels, comics, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor’s suite of explorable planets.
In my gaming world, I’ve found myself often descending into the underbelly of Coruscant, a sprawling metropolis stacked across multiple levels. The lower tiers are a breeding ground for criminal syndicates, each vying for dominance. These areas are smothered in grime and teeming with vermin and creatures that’ll make you wish you were somewhere else.
An Open-World Coruscant Would Be a Star Wars Fan’s Dream
The idea of Coruscant has been entrancing ever since it first appeared in The Phantom Menace. Since then, many fans have been clamoring to be able to explore its many levels and interact with the people who call it home. Even though Star Wars Outlaws may be set within the Outer Rim, it still felt like the perfect opportunity to give fans just that. So, if it gets another chance to explore the Star Wars universe in an open world, Massive needs to consider taking the adventure there.
In a freely explorable Coruscant setting, players might find themselves immersed in countless tales that could keep them wandering its bustling cityscape for hours on end. They’d have the opportunity to traverse the affluent districts, taking in famous landmarks such as the Jedi Temple and Senate, before descending into the underbelly of the metropolis to encounter the city’s seedier elements. Interactions with criminal organizations like the Black Sun would add a thrilling layer to gameplay, while navigating the political landscape of various crime families could create an engaging storyline. Furthermore, Coruscant’s expansive nature makes it a prime candidate for serving as the central focus of an entire video game.
