On April 2nd, the Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to be remembered as a significant day in gaming history, as we received detailed information about its technical specifications and performance capabilities. However, I must admit that I didn’t expect the console to be referred to as the “Super Nintendo Switch” on my list of predictions.
It appears that the anticipated release of the Nintendo Switch 2 is confirmed, along with an expensive price point, prompting debates on game pricing. However, surprisingly little has been said about its name, despite expectations it would be called the Nintendo Switch 2; instead, it was simply referred to as such, and there were almost instances where it wouldn’t have this designation.
An interesting developer interview shows history could’ve looked very different.
We Nearly Had The Super Nintendo Switch Instead of The Switch 2
On the Nintendo site, shortly following the Switch 2 presentation, an exclusive conversation with developers Kouichi Kawamoto, Takuhiro Dohta, and Tetsuya Sasaki became available for viewing.
A variety of discussions and speculations have emerged regarding the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2. These conversations encompass several aspects such as compatibility across platforms between the original Nintendo Switch and the new version, potential enhancements in the Nintendo Switch 2, and its possible name.
One interview question that caught my attention was this: “We haven’t discussed the name aspect yet… What led you to choose the name ‘Nintendo Switch 2’?
In explaining the decision behind the name of the new system, Kawamoto shared: “We had many suggestions for a name, but finding the perfect one was challenging. We even thought about calling it ‘Super Nintendo Switch.’ However, Super NES, which followed the NES and couldn’t play NES games, wasn’t an ideal comparison. Since Switch 2 can play Switch games, we didn’t think it was fitting to stick with the same naming pattern as Super NES. The Switch 2 is a fresh system boasting enhanced performance, but instead of focusing on its technical aspects, we hope players will view it as the latest Nintendo system in development. So, with aspirations for it to become the new standard for the Nintendo Switch family, we named it Nintendo Switch 2.”
Did you know that “Super Nintendo System” was originally considered as its name? It’s interesting to ponder how close we came to adopting this moniker, but regardless, it’s a fascinating tidbit for trivia enthusiasts and hardcore Nintendo fans alike, especially when participating in those intricate Nintendo quizzes.
