The scene opens with Dwight bouncing on an exercise ball at his desk, forcefully exhaling with each bounce. As Dwight attempts to convince Jim to buy one, Jim becomes increasingly annoyed, especially when Dwight’s demonstration of a ‘strong core’ goes wrong and he knocks things off his desk.

Jim, after jokingly detailing the health benefits of a fitness orb and even mentioning an improved sex life (despite being single), asks how much it cost. When he hears it was only $25, he immediately grabs scissors and pops Dwight’s orb. This scene perfectly captures the dynamic between Jim and Dwight – Jim’s understated humor plays brilliantly against Dwight’s over-the-top personality and lack of self-awareness, making them a hilarious pair. It’s a surprisingly subtle comedic moment, especially compared to other opening scenes, which makes it a consistently enjoyable rewatch and my personal favorite cold open. Interestingly, the act of Jim popping the ball was actually a completely unplanned accident during filming.

The hosts of the Office Ladies podcast, Angela Kinsey and Jenna Fischer, revealed that the show’s writers originally intended the scissors incident to result in a gradual deflation, rather than an immediate pop. Jenna Fischer explained:

The plan was for John to puncture the fitness ball with scissors, causing it to deflate gradually. The camera would capture Dwight at his desk, appearing to slowly slump to the floor while Jim watched with a self-satisfied expression. That’s how it was written in the script.

The scene took 13 attempts to get right, and the 14th take was going perfectly until John Krasinski accidentally hit the baseball wrong. This caused it to burst and Rainn Wilson to fall, completely surprising everyone. You can clearly see the shock on Phyllis Smith’s face in the opening of the scene, and John Krasinski almost lost it on camera – viewers can even hear him gasp and start laughing before quickly leaving the shot. The team had to film the take again after that.
