As a gamer with countless hours spent navigating the galaxies of Obsidian Entertainment’s creations, I can confidently say that the news about The Outer Worlds 2’s smooth development has me beaming brighter than a Halcyon-powered spaceship!

As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that, as per Obsidian Entertainment CEO Feargus Urquhart, the development of The Outer Worlds 2 is moving along swimmingly! This eagerly anticipated sequel to the space RPG series promises to build upon the successes of its predecessors, maintaining the trend of outstanding games that Obsidian has delivered in recent times.

Launched in 2019, the game titled “The Outer Worlds” was a humorous critique of unchecked capitalism, influenced by science fiction TV shows such as Futurama and Firefly, along with the Fallout video game series where Obsidian Entertainment, led by Urquhart, made significant contributions. The sequel to this game, “The Outer Worlds 2“, was announced in June 2021 during that year’s E3 event via the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase. Despite being in its infancy stage of development at the time, the teaser trailer garnered much attention due to its witty self-referential humor and a narrator who added dramatic flair while describing onscreen actions like “unnecessary slow motion” that “would boost pre-sale figures.”

Although specific details about the game’s content are scarce, Urquhart appears optimistic regarding its development progress. In an interview published on Limit Break Network’s YouTube channel on August 13, he pointed out that several team members from the initial game have re-joined to work on the sequel, with notable figures such as game director Brandon Adler and creative director Leonard Boyarsky returning. Urquhart expressed confidence in the project due to these key personnel returning, considering it fortunate to retain leadership who appreciate the unique humor of The Outer Worlds.

Development On The Outer Worlds 2 Is Progressing Smoothly

Obsidian Entertainment has enjoyed success in the gaming industry following the launch of their initial title, The Outer Worlds. Subsequent releases such as Grounded, a survival game reminiscent of Honey I Shrunk the Kids, and Pentiment, a 16th-century Bavarian murder mystery set in a 2D environment, have garnered positive feedback from both players and critics. However, delays in release dates due to the pandemic caused some issues for Obsidian, with CEO Feargus Urquhart admitting they were “not the best developer for about a year and a half.” Despite these challenges, he is now optimistic about their current projects – The Outer Worlds 2 and Pillars of Eternity spin-off Avowed, set to release on February 18, 2025.

At a certain stage in their workflow, Urquhart mentioned a potential shift where the team might solely focus on Avowed, leaving The Outer Worlds 2 aside. However, the developers insisted on continuing progress with both projects. Although whispers of another Obsidian RPG in the pipeline date back to 2022, Urquhart has yet to confirm this, but it seems both Avowed and The Outer Worlds 2 will maintain the high-quality standard that fans have grown accustomed to from Obsidian.
