The Outer Worlds 2 Has Gone Gold

The highly anticipated game, The Outer Worlds 2, is finished and ready for release! It’s ‘gone gold,’ meaning production is complete, and its file size has been revealed through pre-loading on Xbox. Developed by Obsidian Entertainment, the sequel to their acclaimed 2019 sci-fi RPG aims to enhance the combat experience while taking players to a new star system called Arcadia, controlled by corporations. The original Outer Worlds was a critical success, even earning a Game of the Year nomination in 2019, so expectations are high for this upcoming release.

2025 is shaping up to be the most significant year yet for Obsidian Entertainment, a game studio with a 22-year history. They launched *Avowed*, their first major fantasy RPG, in February, and it was well-received by fans of their *Pillars of Eternity* series. Then, in June, Obsidian surprised everyone at the Xbox showcase with the announcement of a sequel to *Grounded*, their popular survival game inspired by *Honey, I Shrunk the Kids*. The sequel entered early access on June 29th. And now, after a four-year wait since its initial announcement in 2021, *The Outer Worlds 2* is almost here, capping off an incredible year with three major game releases for Obsidian.

The Outer Worlds 2 Goes Gold and Is Available for Pre-Load

With the release of *The Outer Worlds 2* just three weeks away, several reliable gaming reporters – including Klobrille and HazzadorGamin on Twitter – have reported that the game has “gone gold.” This means Obsidian Entertainment has finished developing the game and is ready to distribute it for its October 29th launch. The game is now available to pre-load on Xbox consoles, and the file size is 80 GB – about twice as large as the original *Outer Worlds*.

Just a heads-up: the initial download size for *The Outer Worlds 2* is 80 GB, but that doesn’t include any updates or patches that might come out on release day, so it could get bigger. Still, 80 GB is typical for a large, modern RPG – some of those games are even over 100 GB. Originally, Xbox planned to only sell *The Outer Worlds 2* digitally, giving those who wanted a physical copy just a code inside the box. However, after fans complained – especially when they found out the PlayStation 5 version would have a real game disc – Xbox changed its plans and will now include a physical disc in the box for Xbox Series X and S owners.

I’m so excited for *The Outer Worlds 2*! As a first-party Xbox game, it’ll be available on Xbox Game Pass right when it launches, which is awesome. It’s a bit annoying that Game Pass Ultimate just got more expensive – now it’s $30 a month – but thankfully that’s the only tier that will include the game when it comes out on October 29th. Still, getting a brand new game like this as part of the subscription makes it totally worth it for me!
