The Outer Worlds 2 is a sci-fi role-playing game where accidental mishaps – like hitting your allies with a stray shot – can quickly lead to trouble. We’ll get into the details of that soon.

Throughout the game, you’ll meet many people asking for help with all sorts of tasks, and some of them aren’t very exciting. For example, you might find yourself investigating something as simple as stolen apples, like in the quest called The Mystifying Case Of The Midnight Marauder. It seems even on Eden, there are mundane problems to solve.

This quest in The Outer Worlds 2 can be tricky if you’re not sure where to start. This guide will help you complete Warren L. Warren’s task and check it off your list.

How To Solve The Mystifying Case Of The Midnight Marauder

Okay, so you’ll stumble across this guy named Warren L. Warren pretty early on – like, right when you start the game in Fairfield. He’s a loss prevention agent, which sounds kinda boring, but he’s decked out in all sorts of crazy gear! You can find him chilling on the porch of a house marked on your map. Seriously, he looks way overprepared for his job.

I had a chat with Warren, and it turns out someone’s been sneaking around stealing food in the middle of the night! I promised to help him figure out who’s doing it. Now there’s a search area showing up on my map whenever I’m looking for clues, which is great because it looks like the first clue is pretty close by!

Go back into the house where you saw Warren. It seems the answer was right there all along! Inside, you’ll find a computer terminal. You’ll need to enter a code to access the information you’re looking for.

You’ll find a small piece of paper on the floor near the refrigerator. Pick it up and read it – it contains instructions and a code you can now use on the computer.

After running the code, choose the first option, “Unseal Cellar.” This is where the thieves are hiding, by the way!

Go back outside and turn right. You’ll see a large open door on the side of the house leading down to the cellar. Go down the stairs, through the door at the bottom, and talk to Sentinel Lorenz.

If you talk to her, she’ll admit she and her group are responsible. Keep the conversation going long enough, and Warren L. Warren will arrive. Eventually, the discussion will escalate into a shootout – it’ll be you and Warren against Sentinel Lorenz and her two allies.

Good news – Warren is incredibly strong, so defeating Lorenz and her team shouldn’t be too difficult. I recommend a shotgun and SMG, but feel free to use whatever weapons you prefer.

Be very careful, as I accidentally hit Warren with a stray bullet, making him an enemy. There’s no fixing this. The quest will finish once you defeat Lorenz and his team, but Warren will still attack you after talking, and you’ll have to defeat either him or be defeated yourself.

Once the fighting is over, this quest will be complete. If Warren hasn’t spoken to you yet, talk to him to finish it.

Quest Rewards

Warren isn’t immediately impressive, but the valuable item you can find in the cellar—a high-security lockbox on top of a crate—makes it worthwhile.

You can open the lockboxes by returning to your ship and using the terminal Valerie pointed out. That’s where you’ll find the option to unlock them.

You’ll probably need to use the arrows on the left of the lockbox screen to find the new item you received from the quest – it’s called “Manager’s Tasking Hat.”

If you obtain all four Advanced Decryption Keys needed to unlock the box, you will receive the Manager’s Tasking Hat.

Need another Advanced Decryption Key fast? Try finishing the Diabolical Drones Of Doom bounty.

This hat boosts the ammo capacity of all your guns by 30% while you’re wearing it. It’s really helpful if you often run out of bullets during fights.

This hat includes a helpful feature called Inspiring Authority. When you start fighting an enemy, it’s automatically marked, telling your companions to focus their attacks on that target for a more effective team takedown. Plus, your companions will take less damage from marked enemies.
