Summary
- Dr. Julian Rush is definitively not Scarecrow according to showrunner Lauren LeFranc.
- The tease of Scarecrow’s presence in The Penguin led to an anticlimactic end for the character.
- The potential for Dr. Rush to develop into other iconic Batman villains like Dr. Hugo Strange remains open.
It’s possible that supporters of the TV series “The Penguin” may find it disappointing to learn that showrunner Lauren LeFranc has clarified the real nature of a specific character, Dr. Julian Rush, portrayed by Theo Rossi. A popular fan theory suggested that this character could potentially be one of Batman’s most infamous villains, “Scarecrow.
In the gripping fourth episode of “The Penguin,” titled “Cent’Anni,” I, as a devoted fan, couldn’t help but notice a tantalizing hint that left me buzzing with anticipation. It was a glimpse of what appeared to be Scarecrow’s iconic syringe gloves and sack mask resting on the desk of Dr. Julian Rush, Sofia Falcone’s therapist at Arkham. This subtle detail ignited a wave of excitement among viewers, fueling theories about Julian Rush’s transformation into the notorious villain in future episodes.
Unfortunately, as the season unfolded, these predictions didn’t come to fruition, and the character of Julian Rush didn’t significantly impact the plot. This unexpected turn of events has left many viewers feeling a bit let down, deeming it an unfortunate misstep in an otherwise brilliant TV series. Some have even labeled this anticlimax as a squandering of Julian Rush’s potential and a minor blemish on an otherwise flawless show.
Dr. Julian Rush Is Not Scarecrow
On the red carpet at the recently concluded Golden Globe Awards, where Colin Farrell won for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Limited Series (for his role as Oswald Cobblepot in “The Penguin”), LeFranc dispelled the “Julian Rush/Scarecrow” fan theory by stating: “Indeed, he’s not playing the Scarecrow.
For enthusiasts of both “The Penguin” and Scarecrow, whose most recent cinematic outing occurred about twenty years ago (portrayed by Cillian Murphy in Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins”), Lefranc’s words sting even more. While the absence of the iconic glove and mask on Rush’s desk in Episode 4 might have gone unnoticed, his behavior and actions hinted at hidden intentions that could be further developed in upcoming episodes. Moreover, there are striking parallels between the character and the comic book version of Scarecrow (Jonathan Crane), one such as both being psychiatrists who specialize in manipulating their patients or victims by skillfully using fear as a tool. The presence of Scarecrow’s symbolic items only served to intensify speculation that Rush might be concealing his true identity.
LeFranc’s analysis contradicts the suggestion that the glove and mask found in Rush’s office were accidentally left behind during filming. This theory is reinforced by their absence when the audience first encounters Sofia in Rush’s office. However, it’s challenging to consider their presence as mere chance due to the distinct shape of the famous gloves and mask. It seems likely that these items were intentionally included, possibly to portray the character as Scarecrow or a variant of him. However, a creative change of direction seemingly abandoned this concept.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but appreciate the meticulous craftsmanship that went into creating the TV show’s characters, and Rush is no exception. It seems clear that his superficial persona serves a deeper purpose yet to be revealed. With Sofia and Rush reunited in Arkham at the end of Season 1, and Matt Reeves hinting at more stories for The Penguin in Season 2, there remains plenty of room for intriguing twists regarding Rush’s character. One possibility that comes to mind is his potential transformation into Dr. Hugo Strange, a DC psychiatrist with eerie similarities to Scarecrow. Exciting times ahead!
