Today, similar to numerous other publishers, remasters and remakes play a significant role in the business strategy of Square Enix. Over the past five years, this Japanese game titan has revamped over a dozen of its cherished JRPGs for contemporary platforms. Titles like “Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7” and “Dragon Quest 3” have been popular among fans, while games such as “Romancing SaGa 2” and “Live A Live” have garnered cult followings. However, despite Square Enix’s recent initiatives, there remain many hidden treasures within their library that haven’t been remastered or remade for current-gen systems.
Among the classic Square Enix games that fans have frequently asked for an updated version is the timeless RPG title, Chrono Trigger. First unveiled in 1995 on the Super Nintendo console, this turn-based Japanese Role Playing Game boasted a stellar team of creators, whom Square affectionately called the “Dream Team.” In addition to Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi and Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, the legendary Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama contributed his talents to this game. Despite Chrono Trigger’s gameplay and storyline remaining relevant today, its timelessness calls for a modern revival, especially now more than ever.
Square Enix Should Bring Chrono Trigger to Current-Gen Consoles
Square Enix Plans to Celebrate Chrono Trigger’s 30th Anniversary With New Projects
2025 marks the 30th anniversary of the classic game “Chrono Trigger,” and to honor this milestone, Square Enix has revealed that they will be launching several new projects tied to the game in the coming months. While they didn’t provide specific details about what these projects entail, their announcement hints that they may extend beyond the game’s existing universe. Based on the language used, it seems possible that Square Enix is planning to release multimedia content such as books, anime, and stage plays inspired by “Chrono Trigger.” However, if Square does have gaming-related plans, fans can hope for a potential release of “Chrono Trigger” on current-generation consoles.
Although It Is on PC & Mobile, Chrono Trigger isn’t Widely Available on Modern Consoles
Despite being one of the most significant Japanese role-playing games ever made, “Chrono Trigger” is not as easily playable nowadays. Although it has been adapted for various systems throughout the past 30 years, such as the PS1, Nintendo DS, iOS, Android, and i-Mode, surprisingly, it hasn’t been released on PlayStation 4/5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, or Nintendo Switch. This situation is particularly puzzling given that the sequel to “Chrono Trigger,” titled “Chrono Cross” in 1999, was remastered for all platforms a few years ago, while its original version remains unremastered.
While there isn’t a “Chrono Trigger” remaster available on modern consoles, a revamped version of the classic JRPG did emerge in 2018. Square Enix released an enhanced adaptation for Windows PCs via Steam. This updated edition featured much of the additional content introduced in the Nintendo DS version, but it received criticism at launch due to graphical glitches and problematic keyboard and mouse controls. However, following updates over time, these issues have been largely addressed, making this PC port a solid choice for enjoying the game.
Interestingly enough, even though the remastered version of Chrono Cross initially struggled with poor performance and graphics at its release, Square Enix rectified these issues in subsequent updates over time.
A Chrono Trigger Console Port Would Be a Great Way to Celebrate Its 30th Anniversary
Given that an adept version of the classic game “Chrono Trigger” is already playable on current hardware, it seems logical that Square Enix might choose to release this port onto PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles this year. Such a release could serve as a fitting tribute to “Chrono Trigger” as it celebrates its 30th anniversary. That being said, some enthusiasts may not be content with just an update and might prefer a full-fledged HD-2D remake of the game instead. Nevertheless, if Square Enix doesn’t possess the necessary resources to completely overhaul “Chrono Trigger“, a straightforward remaster could well suffice for many gamers.
