As a huge fan of crime dramas, I have to say that The Pitt is easily one of the best procedural shows we’ve gotten in years. It’s currently in its second season and you can find it on HBO Max. What really hooked me was the ongoing conflict between Dr. Langdon and Dr. Santos. Throughout season one, Langdon was constantly criticizing Santos’ actions, but Santos didn’t back down. It turned out she was right to fight back, because she actually discovered Langdon was stealing drugs from the hospital – a huge twist!
Both doctors share blame for their ongoing conflict, which has created a rift among viewers since it began in the first season. The tension lingered throughout the second season until Langdon apologized to Santos in episode 12, but she rejected it. Now, after overhearing a conversation, they may be forced to find an uncomfortable compromise, or one of them could be removed from the ER for good.
Dr. Langdon and Dr. Santos Have Had Beef Since The Pitt’s Premiere
Their Feud Only Came to a Head When Dr. Santos Caught Dr. Langdon Stealing Drugs
HBO Max’s The Pitt is a standout medical drama of the last ten years. The show is praised for its realistic portrayal of a busy emergency room and features compelling, believable characters. The doctors and nurses feel like genuine people dealing with intense pressure, which sometimes leads to conflict – occasionally quite intense – within the Pittsburgh Emergency Department.
For much of the first season, there was clear friction between Dr. Langdon and Dr. Santos. Dr. Santos is very confident and has a strong personality, which Dr. Langdon perceived as arrogance and often found pushy when she interacted with colleagues. Instead of addressing his concerns directly with Santos, he publicly scolded her in front of a patient and the entire staff. While this wasn’t the start of their conflict, it was a particularly striking example of the ongoing tension between them.
Dr. Santos eventually figures out Langdon has been stealing medicine and calls him out on it. Dr. Robbie is skeptical at first, but he starts to believe her when he sees how strangely Langdon behaves after the confrontation. When Robbie makes Langdon empty his locker, it proves Dr. Santos was right all along. Many viewers didn’t like this scene, largely because of how the characters were portrayed. The audience naturally sided with Langdon, who seemed like the more likable character, so seeing him proven wrong felt particularly jarring.
Dr. Robby decided to handle the situation privately, avoiding arrest or termination. While everyone at the hospital is aware Langdon went to rehab, the reasons behind it remain a secret to all but a few. This lack of transparency has significantly strained the relationship between Dr. Langdon and Dr. Santos, leading to a major confrontation when Langdon returns to the Emergency Department in season two.
Dr. Langdon Attempted to Make Amends in Season 2, Episode 12
Dr. Santos Is Clearly Not Ready to Accept or Acknowledge Dr. Langdon’s Apology
Throughout the second season, Dr. Langdon mostly avoids Dr. Santos. When they’re finally forced to work together on a case, the encounter is tense and awkward. Dr. Santos believes Dr. Langdon should face consequences for his past actions, while Dr. Langdon feels he’s already made amends. He tries to apologize, but it doesn’t go as planned.
Right away, Dr. Santos starts aggressively confronting Langdon, echoing a heated argument they had earlier in the series. This time, however, the power dynamic has shifted—Dr. Santos is now in control. She firmly refuses to apologize unless Langdon reveals the true reason for his time in rehab. Knowing his job is on the line, Langdon tries to reason with her, but she quickly cuts him off.
This situation has caused a lot of disagreement among fans. While Landon clearly made a serious mistake and should face consequences, he’s also been working hard to improve himself in a recovery program for the past nine months. Santos acted in good faith by keeping Landon’s secret, though it seems this was more of a favor to Dr. Robbie than to Landon himself. However, all of this might become less important soon, as their conversation was overheard by someone who could change everything if Landon confesses what happened.
Their Conversation Wasn’t Completely Private and Could Have Lasting Consequences
Dr. Al-Hashimi, The New Attending, Heard Every Word of Their Explosive Argument
Dr. Al-Hashimi has joined the Pittsburgh emergency department as the lead physician. This puts her in charge of all the doctors, from students to experienced staff like Langdon. She recently listened to Langdon and Santos’ ongoing argument, and many think she’ll help them resolve it. It’s likely Dr. Al-Hashimi will push for one side to concede, but it’s unclear whose side she’ll take, or if she’ll take one at all.
Currently, there are two main theories about how Dr. Al-Hashimi will react. She might understand Langdon’s struggles and recognize his efforts to improve, but she could also support Santos, particularly since Langdon minimized their conflict earlier in the season. If Al-Hashimi tries to fire Langdon, it will be interesting to see if Dr. Robbie intervenes.
The conflict between Dr. Langdon and Dr. Santos is central to the story of The Pitt. Now that Dr. Al-Hashimi knows why they’re fighting, a resolution is inevitable. While she generally follows the rules, suggesting she might support Santos, The Pitt often surprises viewers. So, it’s equally possible she’ll side with Langdon. Regardless, the long-awaited conclusion to their conflict will arrive in Season 2, Episode 13 of The Pitt.
