Since its release in November 2020, the PlayStation 5 has had a challenging journey. While the COVID-19 pandemic initially seemed like a good time to launch a new gaming console with many people staying home, the pandemic actually created major problems. Specifically, disruptions to the global supply chain made it difficult for Sony to produce and deliver enough consoles to meet demand.
Sony faced major supply chain problems that weren’t officially resolved until 2023. The pandemic also slowed down game development, leading to a slower start for this console generation. While the PS5 is now five years old, Sony exclusives were only recently moving away from the PS4. The PS5 is finally establishing itself as a standalone console, but news from Kojima Productions suggests the PS6 may already have its first exclusive game in development.
The PS5 is Finally Getting its Time in the Spotlight, But Kojima Productions’ Physint Could Already Be Teasing the PS6’s Future Lineup
Physint is Years Away at This Point
This week, Kojima Productions marked its 10th anniversary as a game studio. Over the past ten years, they’ve created both *Death Stranding* and its follow-up, *Death Stranding 2*, which came out in June. *Death Stranding 2* was initially released only on PlayStation 5, highlighting the console’s importance to Sony. However, the recent announcement of Kojima’s new spy thriller, *Physint*, suggests the PS5’s period as the main focus might not last long.
Hideo Kojima stated in May that his game, *Physint*, is still at least five or six years away from release. This means gamers likely won’t be able to play it until 2030 at the earliest. While the wait will be lengthy, this timeline could position *Physint* as one of the first games exclusively for the next-generation PlayStation 6 console.

Rumors Suggest That the PS6 Isn’t That Far Away
Lots of speculation surrounds the release of the PlayStation 6, but many believe it will launch in late 2027 or 2028, with 2028 being the more probable timeframe. Considering the PS5 has only been out for a few years – and faced initial supply problems – it doesn’t feel like long until the PS6 arrives. The PS5 still feels new to many, and a significant number of gamers haven’t even upgraded to it yet.

The shift to new generation consoles has been surprisingly slow. While some big games like *Death Stranding 2*, *Ghost of Yotei*, and *Battlefield 6* are only available on the newest systems, major franchises such as the upcoming *Call of Duty: Black Ops 7* are still supporting older consoles. Five years into a console’s lifespan, it’s unusual that exclusive, next-generation games aren’t more common.

The PS5 Still Has a Few Years to Shine
With the release of *Ghost of Yotei* nearing, it’s likely to be one of the final PlayStation 5 exclusives this year. The roguelike game *Saros* is also planned for release, though its launch is currently scheduled for 2026. Sony is also developing other titles, including *Marvel’s Wolverine* and *Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet*. It will be interesting to see what the next few years hold for the PS5, and hopefully Sony can release more exclusive games before the next console generation arrives.
