As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my gaming belt, I must say that The Plucky Squire is a delightful and refreshing addition to the indie scene. This game offers an enchanting blend of 2D puzzle-solving, 3D exploration, and unique mini-games that make it stand out from the crowd.
Dimension-shifting has been a common feature in the gaming world for many years. It started with iconic 2.5D games such as Crash Bandicoot and Klonoa, introducing us to a unique blend of 2D and 3D design. More recent examples include Fez, Super Paper Mario, and Topdee and Topdee in the 2D and 3D realm. However, some might say that none are as daring as Devolver Digital’s latest indie hit, The Plucky Squire.
In this article, we delve into an extraordinary game called “The Plucky Squire,” which strives to provide a unique, storybook adventure that echoes classic top-down Zelda games while maintaining a distinct personality and humor to differentiate itself. The question is whether its narrative is compelling enough to keep readers hooked or if it’s destined to become an overlooked title. This is our review of “The Plucky Squire,” played on a PC platform.
Cathartic Cartoon Whimsy
If you’ve followed the development of The Plucky Squire in any shape or form, the thing that will have drawn you to this game will undoubtedly have been its whimsical, cute-as-a-button storybook aesthetic. In this title, players assume the role of Jot, the titular Plucky Squire, and their tale is told through beautifully illustrated 2D storybook environments.
In the story, when the villain Humpgrump swallows the red pill and learns that their life is dictated by the events in their book world, the wizard expels Jot from the book, causing chaos. This is a disaster for Jot, but as a player, you’re overjoyed because this transition from 2D to 3D is an incredible spectacle.
The ability to seamlessly jump from your cluttered desktop to an elaborate doodle feels incredibly satisfying, and this is only further accented by the tight platforming, accessible combat, and varied world design.
Instead of merely using the transition from 2D to 3D as a single novelty trick, the game skillfully employs its demonstrated mechanics to regularly pull you out of your 2D environment. This gives players an opportunity to appreciate the smooth fusion of dimensions, interact with the world in inventive manners, and solve puzzles that effectively intertwine both realms.
In this game, you might become so immersed in its magical world inspired by childhood dreams that you could occasionally overlook flaws in the fundamental gameplay mechanics. Despite being captivated by the enchantment, I found myself acknowledging that the stunning visual design and dimension-shifting trick are, to some extent, relied upon heavily by the game as a whole.
Engaging But Effortless
Although both the 2D storybook worlds and 3D landscapes boast their distinct peaks, it’s also evident that each game mechanic is refined only to a functional level, rather than being polished to its full potential, giving off an impression of being competent in many areas but excelling in none.
This is present in the 2D storybook environments when players are forced to endure more than their fair share of basic Zelda-esque hack-and-slash combat that offers little to no challenge, and only serves to pad out each conflict in each respective chapter.
Then, as for the various puzzles within the game, each one is undeniably clever in terms of design and, by extension, quite satisfying to complete. But, as with any puzzle, you expect some sort of mental hurdle to overcome and an ‘A-ha’ moment. However, due to the aggressively accessible nature of the gameplay, nothing ever feels like a test or a challenge, which can make these great concepts feel like a means to an end.
Experience the intriguing gameplay of word swaps that alter your game environment. As a fundamental idea, it’s incredibly captivating, offering vast opportunities for creativity and player freedom. However, upon closer examination, the solutions often appear quite straightforward and predictable, with only minor cosmetic adjustments to the world if you wish to grab related achievements.
In certain instances throughout this game, I found myself drawn to environments reminiscent of classic Zelda games, offering both aesthetic appeal and a sense of nostalgia. However, despite showing potential for an engaging puzzle game, it seems to be a somewhat repetitive tribute to those older titles. On the positive side, this makes it an ideal choice if you’re looking for a kid-friendly video game experience.
Breaking The Fourth Wall
As mentioned, the core gameplay is little more than a 2D Zelda-like with lite puzzle elements in my book. But where the game makes up for this is when the fourth wall is broken, and the 3rd dimension is unlocked. It’s a game that dines out on moments, and the finest and most whimsical of these are when you are cast from the pages you call home.
As I journey through a kid’s room filled with creative scribbles and messy desk items, it’s an exhilarating adventure that truly highlights the charm of The Plucky Squire. It’s bursting with innovative mini-games, like a bullet hell game reminiscent of Resogun on the surface of a coffee mug or a strategic turn-based RPG battle inspired by Magic The Gathering’s trading card game mechanics.
Despite its somewhat formulaic 2D gameplay, these engaging moments make it all worthwhile. Admittedly, the 3D environments are where you might experience performance troubles and the occasional softlock, but the frequent checkpoints mitigate these issues, making the exciting dimension-hopping sequences the game offers a valuable trade-off.
A Real Page Turner
As a gamer, I crave diving headfirst into a realm distinct from mine, where my creativity knows no bounds. That’s exactly what The Plucky Squire delivers – a game story that might not be deep in emotional depths or philosophical ponderings, but it sure is a delightful, imagination-sparking adventure. The narrative is well-crafted, engaging, and written with a charming whimsy that keeps me hooked.
Just as the 2D puzzles and gameplay can feel like a means to an end, so can some of the more plodding chapters, with chapter 6 feeling like a real slog with no real high points aside from a quirky mini-game.However, the story shines when players are given large environments to explore, plenty of previous pages of the book to flip through and experiment with, and the game’s unique brand of silliness and meta-commentary is front and center.
One of the finest examples of this is the wonderful city dedicated to history’s famous artists. Each nod to the finest artists in existence is done in a silly and sublime way, akin to how Astro Bot has you guessing which bot belongs to each franchise.
Once more, the emphasis on distinctive ‘moments’ sets this story apart from others, giving it a more refined feel. Yet, what remains consistent is the playful, self-referential, and lighthearted atmosphere the game emanates, lending each segment a comfortable and heartwarming quality that many indie game enthusiasts appreciate.
Closing Comments:
The Enchanting Knight’s Tale is a title that is both recognizable and innovative, yet ambitiously creative. At its peak, it offers an engaging dimension-jumping adventure with exceptional meta-writing, memorable set-pieces, mini-games, and imaginative puzzle mechanics. However, the game can at times feel overly accessible, which makes the combat and exploration feel like a repetitive Zelda-inspired experience. Additionally, each puzzle concept seems promising but doesn’t fully realize its potential. Despite these minor shortcomings, The Enchanting Knight’s Tale is a heartwarming and endearing indie game that merits your playtime. While some technical glitches need to be addressed, the harmonious blend of 2D and 3D gameplay is worth the effort. It might just be the best 2D/3D combination since Fez, which is no small feat.
