As a die-hard manga enthusiast with years of reading under my belt, I can hardly contain my excitement for Kaiu Shirai’s latest project, “APPLE.” Collaborating with Amano Youichi, the creator of “Ana no Mujina,” this noir one-shot promises to be a thrilling read. Set to drop in Weekly Shonen Jump issue 2/2025 on December 6, 2024, I’ll be counting down the days like a kid on Christmas eve!

Kaiu Shirai, creator of The Promised Neverland, is teaming up with Amano Youichi from Ana no Mujina for a new one-shot titled APPLE. This upcoming work is a noir action story and will be published in the December 6, 2024 issue of Weekly Shonen Jump 2025/2. Exciting times ahead for fans!

Details about the storyline and characters for the upcoming one-shot remain undisclosed at this time. It’s expected that these details will only become clear when it is released. If you loved The Promised Neverland, I highly recommend checking out APPLE as well.

Kaiu Shirai’s Other Projects

In the year 2015, Kaiu Shirai debuted his first independent work titled “The Location of Ashley-Gat”. This was subsequently followed by another solo creation named “Poppy’s Wish”. During this collaboration, he teamed up with Posuka Demizu. Following this project, Kaiu Shirai began working on a manuscript entitled Neverland, which eventually transformed into The Promised Neverland. Serialization of the manga commenced in Weekly Shonen Jump starting from August 2016 and concluded in June 2020.

Initially, when Kaiu Shirai presented his work at the Weekly Shonen Jump editorial office, they found it didn’t quite fit their typical manga style. Later, he was given approval but was asked to conclude his story within 12 volumes or fewer. Nevertheless, the author’s trials were far from finished. He had to locate an artist capable of embodying the manga’s spirit. After being turned down by several artists, Kaiu Shirai ultimately collaborated with Posuka Demizu.

The Success Of The Promised Neverland

  • First season was excellent
  • Second season was poorly done

The graphic novel “The Promised Neverland” experienced tremendous popularity and managed to sell approximately 42 million copies, placing it among the most successful mangas ever published. Additionally, this series was put forward for numerous accolades, ultimately taking home several awards. Given its extraordinary success, “The Promised Neverland” was chosen for an anime adaptation in 2018. The anime eventually premiered in January 2019 and ran for a total of 12 episodes, concluding in March 2019.

Back in 2019, I was thrilled when The Promised Neverland’s second season was announced. I was even more excited when I thought we’d be watching it in 2020. But, alas, the pandemic had other plans, and it got delayed. Unfortunately, when it finally aired, it didn’t sit well with many fans like me because it leaped over several important arcs and characters.

Apart from the animated version, there’s a film adaptation and a television series in live action format. Additionally, “The Promised Neverland” published an art book in November of 2024.

The Promised Neverland is available to watch on Crunchyroll.
