Interestingly, there’s one card in particular that stands out for its scarcity, and I have a feeling its status as the rarest in the game may never waver.

As a gamer, I’ve got to say that even though Pokemon TCG Pocket remains a gacha game at its core, it’s been quite generous for free-to-play users since day one. There are usually plenty of free events in the game, and while the prizes might not always be top-tier or super valuable, they do help us build our Pokemon collection. However, the topic of promos has stirred up controversy since their introduction, and some of them, like that one elusive one, are not only hard to get but may never reappear again.

Pokemon TCG Pocket’s Lapras Ex is The Rarest Card in The Game

The idea behind promotional cards is not fresh; typically, they are existing cards with unique artwork or a promotional mark to make them special, rather than entirely new, exclusive cards. However, Lapras Ex was an exception to this rule as it was only produced as a promo and is no longer available from its associated event or any subsequent set. Therefore, the Lapras Ex card in the Pokemon TCG Pocket collection can only be found by those who obtained it during that event. Unless the event returns (which would undermine the purpose of promotional items and the fear of missing out they create), this card will remain a rare, one-of-a-kind collectible.

Among all cards, Lapras Ex might be matched in rarity or even surpassed only by the real-money exclusive Shiny Mewtwo Ex. However, its Genetic Apex equivalent shares the same mechanics.

Why Pokemon TCG Pocket’s Trade Plans Don’t Change Promo Cards’ Rarity

The changes to trading in the Pokemon TCG Pocket game, which they plan to implement later this year, mark a positive initial move. They’ve indicated their aim is to make promotional cards like Lapras Ex tradeable. However, these adjustments won’t necessarily boost the number of Lapras Ex cards in circulation, as it was an event card from the game’s early days, and there aren’t many of them left.

It’s important to mention that during the recent Rayquaza EX event for Pokemon TCG Pocket, players were able to receive a card not typically found in booster packs. For an entire month, they had the opportunity to obtain a full art version of this unique card, regardless of whether or not they participated in the event.

Having the ability to trade promos would still be an exciting outcome for players, but it only partially alleviates the fear of missing out (FOMO) that’s typical in time-limited cards. Players may not be able to play during a specific week or they might just have bad luck with card pulls and never obtain a single copy of a particular card. Trading doesn’t necessarily make those rare cards more accessible, it merely provides a method for players to acquire them in exchange for something else. This issue was highlighted with the Lapras Ex set, and future sets of Pokemon TCG Pocket should address it by making the card available through a different, non-promo artwork instead.
