Although it’s thrilling to learn that The Rookie, starring John Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and his endearing team, is returning for season 8, there’s some news about the ABC procedural that might disappoint devoted fans a bit.
Get ready, as The Rookie season 7 finale is soon to unfold! With the exhilarating and unpredictable journey of the previous 17 episodes, this hour promises to be one for the record books. Debuting in 2018, the uplifting and entertaining drama has been a delight to Castle and Firefly fans, especially with Nathan Fillion gracing our screens again in another successful TV series. The Rookie season 7 began with episode 1, “The Shot,” on January 7th, 2025, introducing two new recruits at the Los Angeles Police Department. Despite The Rookie spinoff, The Rookie: Feds, being canceled after airing for a brief period in 2022 and 2023, showrunner Alexi Hawley has expressed interest in creating another spinoff, although nothing is officially set in motion yet. As fans eagerly await the finale’s surprises and twists, they’ll be on the edge of their seats waiting for updates about the show.
The Rookie Season 8 Will Premiere As Part Of ABC’s Midseason Schedule

According to Deadline, “The Rookie” season 8 is set to debut in January 2026 as part of ABC’s midseason lineup. This means it won’t be part of the fall broadcast schedule, and viewers who were anticipating a September 2025 premiere might find this news disappointing. Similarly, “Will Trent” season 4 will also air during the middle of the television season.
As a dedicated movie enthusiast, I’d put it like this: I, Craig Erwich, Disney Television President, shared that the successful mid-season premiere of ‘The Rookie’ on ABC led us to make the decision we did.
Rookie and Will Trent are a reprise of the incredibly successful lineup we had last season. Interestingly, Will Trent was one of the very few broadcast shows that saw an increase in viewership from one year to the next. I believe this was due to the fact that when we begin airing in January, we can show all episodes consecutively, which generates a sense of continuity and momentum.
Although it’s challenging to endure the wait until January 2026 to witness what unfolds for Nolan and his group next, the exceptional way this season has been crafted ensures that fans will eagerly anticipate each passing day. There were scarcely any boring instances, as events ranged from Seth Ridley’s (Patrick Keheler) reappearance to Skip Tracer Randy’s (Flua Borg) amusing and quirky return for a standout episode.
On Tuesday nights, both “The Rookie” and “Will Trent” will return to our screens once more. Additionally, reruns of the crime series “High Potential” are scheduled for Tuesdays as well. Kaitlin Olsen plays Morgan in this series, a mom whose exceptional memory skill lands her a consulting role with the LAPD. Similar to Nolan on “The Rookie”, Morgan is an immediately endearing character who perceives things that others often miss. Erwich described Tuesdays as a “powerhouse night” with all three shows, and further added:
“Tuesday night has become really a must-see destination night of television for our viewers.”
In simple terms, the season finale for “The Rookie” Season 7 is set to air on May 13th, 2025, meaning fans have to wait approximately seven months until Season 8 begins. The 18th episode, titled “The Good, the Bad, and the Oscar,” will bring back the memorable and distinctive antagonist Oscar Hutchinson (played by Matthew Glave). It’s not hard to guess that there might be a significant, jaw-dropping twist in the closing scenes.
In addition to The Rookie, the series features Melissa O’Neil portraying the wise and compassionate Lucy Chen, Eric Winter playing her long-standing, tough-guy love interest Tim Bradford, and Deric Augustine as the most recent recruit, Miles Penn. Other notable characters include Lisseth Chavez as Celina Juarez, Mekia Cox as Nyla Harper, and Alyssa Diaz as Angela Lopez, who are equally intelligent and kind-hearted.
