Currently, it’s tough to come across a video game not linked to a movie or TV series, yet one frequently overlooked title in development for the big screen is “Shadow of the Colossus”. For quite some time now, there has been no news on the film adaptation, but a recent update confirms that the project is still underway.

Back in 2005, Shadow of the Colossus was one of Sony’s most remarkable games on the PlayStation 2. Since then, it has been updated for various new PlayStation systems and was highly acclaimed upon its release, earning top ratings that year. The plot revolves around a protagonist named Wander who embarks on a journey to kill sixteen colossal creatures scattered across a forbidden territory, all in an effort to resurrect a girl named Mono. Interestingly, a movie adaptation of this game has been in production since 2009 and was believed to have stalled after years with no updates.

The Shadow of the Colossus Movie Is Still Happening

Since 2009, the development of the adaptation of “The Shadow of Colossus” has experienced several creative changes. At one point, Josh Trank was slated as director, but he eventually withdrew from the project in 2014. Andy Muschietti then stepped up to take on directing duties. Since then, there have been few updates about the project, with Muschietti focusing on other projects like “It: Chapter One,” “It: Chapter Two,” “The Flash,” and the upcoming “IT: Welcome to Derry.” Recently, however, the director confirmed that the project is still in progress.

During an interview with Reconectados, Muschietti confirmed that the project for a Shadow of the Colossus movie is still alive and has a script ready. He expressed his fondness for the film, stating, “I really like this story,” and continued by saying, “The production of this movie has been ongoing for about 10 years, and now we have an opportunity to bring it to life.” The director also mentioned that securing a suitable budget is one of the main challenges in bringing Shadow of the Colossus to the big screen. “Shadow of the Colossus is a highly regarded game,” he said, “but to make a great movie, there needs to be a studio willing to invest a significant amount, like 200, 150 or even 100 million dollars. Different versions of the film exist, and naturally, I’d love to have 200 million, but this is another aspect to consider.

I really enjoy that movie; the script appeals to me greatly. However, there are elements unrelated to your passion for filmmaking or personal preference, but rather tied to the popularity and intellectual value of such a property.

The Success of Recent Video Game Adaptations Could Be A Good Sign for Shadow of the Colossus

The movie adaptation of “Shadow of the Colossus” would likely heavily utilize grand spectacles and special effects, considering its fantasy backdrop. Recently, video game adaptations have been garnering significant attention, with productions like “Five Nights at Freddy’s”, “Sonic the Hedgehog”, “The Last of Us”, and “Fallout” all being considered successful. This surge in popularity could potentially rekindle interest in the “Shadow of the Colossus” film, providing it with the necessary funding to accurately adapt the cherished game.
