The second episode from “The Last of Us Season 2” was full of action, while the third one took a more subdued approach. It felt like an episode set after a massive event had occurred, and some significant characters, such as Abby and her entire group, were noticeably absent in it.

In each episode of The Last of Us Season 2, there have been modifications from the original games to craft a fresh storyline. While it’s still heading towards the same destination, unique paths are being chosen along the way. So, let’s explore the novel ways Episode 3 of The Last of Us Season 2 deviated from the familiar path.

Spoilers Ahead for The Last of Us Season 2, Episode 3

6. The Aftermath Of Joel’s Death

And The Infected Riot

As a passionate cinema enthusiast, let me share my thoughts on an intriguing aspect of Episode 3 – moments that the game version didn’t reveal. For instance, in the game, we never get to see what happened to Joel’s body after his demise. However, in this episode, Tommy has a poignant moment as he tenderly cleans Joel at the morgue. Although no tears are shed by Tommy, he does convey a heartfelt message to Joel – to pass on greetings to Sarah, his niece and Joel’s daughter from before the apocalypse.

The atmosphere of this particular episode feels distinct due to multiple characters, not just Joel, going on this journey. Sadly, many people have perished or required medical attention, with Ellie among them. Remarkably, she is treated by Gail, who has returned after being absent since Episode 2.

5. The Time Jump

A Little Early On Three Months Later

Following Abby’s assault, events progress rapidly in the game. Ellie heals unseen, Joel is laid to rest, and the mission continues in just a few days. After Ellie and Dina depart for Seattle, a time jump occurs to skip over their long journey on the road.

In Episode 3, we see a time jump that sets the stage for Jackson’s reconstruction, the burial of the deceased, and Ellie’s healing from her injuries. This is also when Dina discloses that she had been keeping secrets from Ellie and everyone else in Jackson. Unlike Tommy, who was with Joel during his last moments in the game, Dina was the one privy to information about Abby and the W.L.F.

4. The Seraphites (Scars) Appear

Not So Brutal In Their Intro

In the game “The Last of Us Part 2”, we encounter two primary groups: Abby belongs to the W.L.F., a faction that split from or at least has similar objectives as The Fireflies. On the other hand, there’s another group known as the Seraphites, or Scars, who are characterized by their strong religious beliefs.

In the game, the unveiling of the Seraphites stands out as one of the most impactful and gruesome moments in the campaign. However, in Episode 3, these characters are introduced much earlier than depicted in the original storyline. Here, we see the Seraphites portrayed peacefully, but they exhibit fear of unknown threats lurking beyond. Later on, Ellie and Dina come across their remains and suspect the W.L.F., but this might not be entirely accurate.

3. The Town Meeting

Deciding Joel’s Fate

In the game and series, Ellie is resolute on departing from Jackson, driven by either justice or revenge in search of Abby. In the game, she shares her intentions with Tommy and Maria to gain approval for a small group exit. On the other hand, the show features a massive town hall gathering to decide Jackson’s future as a whole.

Following the discussion, it’s been decided that the council, where Jesse is now a member, will conduct a vote, and this is somewhat distinct from the usual game dynamics. The consensus among the group is almost universal that Jackson won’t seek revenge. During the meeting, Ellie assures everyone she’ll adhere to their decision, but in reality, she intends to depart since she is resolute about leaving.

2. Ellie And Dina Leaving

Seth Comes Through

In the storyline, Tommy pledged to discuss their situation with Maria to secure permission for them to depart from Jackson. However, when Ellie wakes up the following day, Tommy has already departed without her awareness. Angered by this, Maria grants Ellie permission to chase after Tommy, accompanied by a single horse named Shimmer and Dina to serve as a guide. The council meeting in the series doesn’t disclose who voted yes or no, but it appears that Tommy may have been against their motion. Unlike his game counterpart, Tommy is less impulsive in the show.

In a fresh turn of events, he’s got a child now, an unexpected factor. Despite his affection for Joel and his thirst for vengeance, Tommy prioritizes his wife and son over these feelings. The question then arises: Who assists Ellie and Dina in their escape from Jackson? By the cloak of darkness, Seth provides them with a horse and weaponry as an apology for his thoughtless words during the dance in the first episode. Originally a minor character in the game, Seth is now making a stand for something just, attempting to make amends.

1. Ellie And Dina’s Relationship

Why Did Dina Come?

Dina decided to join Ellie in the game out of affection for her. This feeling grew stronger during their dance, where they shared a kiss, but later deepened when they spent a night together on their scouting mission, which eventually led them to sleep together. From that moment, they were officially a couple. Because she formed a bond with Ellie, Dina accompanied her to Seattle.

In the series so far, Ellie and Dina haven’t encountered that particular situation yet, as Ellie went on a scouting trip with Jesse, while Dina was with Joel. The motivation for Dina joining Ellie now is to seek vengeance for Joel, as she feels responsible for the unfortunate event. However, it’s clear that a bond is forming between them, and Dina does mention to Ellie that she returned to Jesse. This could potentially create complications in their relationship. Is their love story destined to fade away?
