Caitlin Todd, played by Sasha Alexander.

Prior to her portrayal of Kate Todd in NCIS, Sasha Alexander was a favorite for her role as Pacey’s older sister Gretchen Witter on Dawson’s Creek. The actress has made a career out of lengthy television roles, playing Dr. Maura Isles from 2010 to 2016 on Rizzoli & Isles and Helene Runyon from 2015 to 2016 on Shameless. Regrettably, Kate’s tenure on NCIS did not last indefinitely. Although I comprehend the reasons behind Alexander leaving NCIS, I was hoping that her captivating character could have continued on the CBS procedural.

Why Did Sasha Alexander Leave NCIS?

In NCIS season 2, episode 23 titled “Twilight”, character Kate Todd was fatally shot by Ari Haswari (played by Rudolf Martin). This event wasn’t a result of creative storytelling decisions, but rather a choice made by the actress Sasha Alexander. She revealed her reasons for leaving NCIS in a 2012 interview with TV Guide. The actress stated that she decided to part ways with the series for personal reasons.

Many fail to grasp the intensity of working on a network series. You produce 24 episodes annually, which equates to approximately 10 and a half months, or around 17 hours each day. It’s no walk in the park.

In my perspective, both Kate and the exceptional Abby Sciuto, portrayed by Pauley Perrette, were integral pieces of the team. Their absence is still felt deeply. Leaving NCIS was undeniably the right decision for her as it allowed her to strike a harmonious balance between family life and creativity. She made it clear that this move was necessary and beneficial.

As a passionate cinephile, I can’t help but reflect on the path that led me here – blissfully married, parenting two wonderful children, and pursuing creative endeavors that truly resonate with me. If I had chosen to stay put, I might not have experienced this fulfillment. The allure of monotony in my forties was something I eagerly chose to avoid. Yet, it seems few comprehend the significance of my decision.

Why (And How) I Want Sasha Alexander’s NCIS Character Kate Todd To Return

While Sasha Alexander’s decision to depart from NCIS may be understandable given the demanding nature of TV production, I must admit I still miss the sharp-witted character Kate Todd for several reasons. Firstly, I found the constant banter between Kate and Tony DiNozzo (Michael Weatherly) entertaining and their workplace rivalry amusing. Secondly, I was intrigued by the dynamic mentee/mentor relationship that Kate shared with Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon). Watching this evolve as she grew more experienced would have been fascinating. Similar bonds between characters in The Rookie season 7 resonate strongly on a procedural show, much like what Kate and Gibbs had.

Although it might be challenging to reintegrate the character of Kate into NCIS as she is deceased, and I’m uncertain if Alexander wishes to reprise her role due to her reasons for leaving, there remains a glimmer of anticipation that fans will catch a glimpse of her again. I personally envision a brief, poignant cameo flashback scene in an upcoming NCIS season, as her death was swift and brutal, leaving fans yearning for closure. Additionally, it would be delightful to see another whimsical dream sequence featuring Kate. Kate first appeared in the NCIS Season 9 episode 14 titled “Life Before His Eyes,” where she was still alive. In this instance, Kate and DiNozzo were portrayed as married parents, a heartwarming depiction. Perhaps a current character could experience a dream about Kate, offering an engaging method for her reappearance. While it may seem unrealistic to expect Kate’s return, I will always cherish the hope.
