The following contains spoilers for the Solo Leveling manhwa.
Although two seasons of the anime adaptation of Solo Leveling have been released, numerous secrets about the world are yet to be unveiled for those who only watch the series. One such enigma revolves around the origin of hunter abilities. Initially, it appears as if humans simply developed these abilities once gates emerged, but the question remains: how and why were specific individuals bestowed with such powerful abilities?
Though the narrative of “Solo Leveling” is ongoing and some details are still unfolding, insights from forthcoming storylines that haven’t been animated yet provide illumination about the enigmatic appearance of gates and hunter abilities.
A Plan by the Rulers
The Gates Strengthen Humanity

In the popular comic series “Solo Leveling”, it is disclosed that entities called the Rulers have been strategically opening gates on Earth, which may initially appear malevolent. However, the Rulers aimed to safeguard Earth and its inhabitants by their actions. As more gates appeared globally, the planet would gradually absorb mana from vanquished monsters, serving as a potential defense for humanity in their impending conflict against entities known as the Monarchs.
It’s believed that humans started developing their hunting skills due to an increase in a substance called mana within their bodies. Yet, it’s also evident that excessive mana can lead to harmful effects in certain individuals, such as Jinwoo’s mother’s mana-induced sleeping sickness. These observations raise questions about the exclusive source of hunter abilities being just from the gates, as there seem to be other factors at play.
Ahead, it becomes clear that the Leaders can bestow powers upon hunters directly by transforming humans into containers for these abilities. It transpires that the hunters who are containers (vessels) are significantly stronger than their peers due to this transformation. These exceptional hunters, referred to as National-Level Hunters, function as proxies for the Leaders since direct interaction between the Leaders and Earth or the human realm is difficult otherwise.
It appears that the power bestowed by a Ruler could have been the source of human hunter abilities. This notion arises due to the fact that mana, the energy believed to underlie these abilities, might trace its roots to the Absolute Being, the deity who brought the universe into existence and is responsible for the creation of both Rulers and Monarchs.
Human Awakening
How People Develop Powers

Hunters can draw upon a mysterious energy known as mana, which serves as their power supply for invoking their abilities after they’ve gone through an enlightenment process. This enlightenment bestows upon hunters a relatively fixed quantity of mana within them, the level of which is assessed to assign their rank.
In the anime, it’s clear that hunters don’t have control over their inherent abilities; they simply receive them without any choice or influence. This is illustrated through the character Song Chi-Yul, who was trained as a master swordsman but unexpectedly gained mage abilities. Displeased because his newfound mage skills clash with his natural talents in close combat, he decides to step away from active hunting and instead focuses on training other hunters in swordsmanship. Despite his diligent attempts, Song Chi-Yul struggles to effectively combine his fire magic and sword skills.
Time is running short for me. Before my life ends, I fervently wish to contribute even more to our world.”
This version maintains the original sentiment while using simpler and more conversational language.
Delving into the captivating realm of fiction, I’ve stumbled upon extraordinary figures who defy the conventional wisdom that hunters can never augment their strength. Take Sung Jinwoo, for instance, a character imbued with the might of the Shadow Monarch. His journey is marked by unparalleled growth, as the system meticulously fine-tunes his body to handle the full force of the monarch’s powers.
Similarly, characters like Rulers can bestow their powers upon selected humans, amplifying their abilities exponentially. Intriguingly, a character named Norma Selner is capable of enhancing Hunter powers beyond their initial potential. Yet, in this captivating narrative, her attempts to augment Jinwoo’s powers fall short due to his seemingly limitless capabilities.
As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but marvel at the intricate details unveiled in the Solo Leveling manhwa thus far. Yet, the story is still unfolding, and each new chapter brings us closer to understanding the origin of these hunter powers. Who knows what unexpected twists and turns await us? The beauty of it all is that the anime adaptation might tweak some rules along the way, adding an extra layer of excitement to our journey!
Solo Leveling can be streamed on Crunchyroll and Amazon.
