Summary
- The origin of the zombie outbreak is finally revealed in the post-credits scene of The Walking Dead: World Beyond.
- The virus originated in a biomedical facility in France and was created accidentally.
- The revelation led to more questions than answers, leaving fans with uncertainties about the virus’s spread.
Discussing either the comics or the TV series of “The Walking Dead” and its various offshoots, a closely kept secret within the entire franchise is the origin of the zombie apocalypse. It wasn’t due to the creator of The Walking Dead waiting for an opportune moment to disclose it. In fact, for a long time, Robert Kirkman made it known that he didn’t want people to know how it began.
The comic book and TV show version of “The Walking Dead” initiate the zombie apocalypse without showing it on screen while Rick Grimes is in a coma. When he wakes up, he finds himself in a world overrun by zombies, with no explanation given for how or why this outbreak occurred. Even though the comic and TV series have been running for many years, they never provided an answer to this question. However, it was only recently, during “The Walking Dead: World Beyond,” that we learned what caused the world to collapse and who was responsible. This revelation, however, was kept hidden from all but the most dedicated fans.
The Walking Dead World Beyond: Is This Really The Origin?

In the finale of ‘The Walking Dead: World Beyond’ Season 2, the scene after the credits provided an explanation for how the zombies in The Walking Dead came to be.
The post-credits scene implies that the zombie outbreak from ‘The Walking Dead’ originated in Europe. This is further confirmed in ‘World Beyond’, where a biomedical facility in France is shown. In this deserted research center, an unnamed scientist returns to continue her work on the virus and find a cure. However, she encounters another survivor who seems familiar with the lab’s secrets. When the scientist expresses her intention to end the zombie apocalypse, the other survivor retorts, “You want to end this? You started it.
On the same building’s wall, there’s a somewhat foreboding note written as, “The Dead Are Born Here.” It seems this message was penned by another researcher, lab worker, or possibly the individual who confronts our potential hero.
It strongly appears that this laboratory is connected to the start of the global pandemic we now face. The research team seems to have unintentionally released the virus, which they were presumably studying with the intention of finding a cure. Regrettably, it managed to escape the lab and spread rapidly across the globe. Now, it’s been discovered that every person worldwide carries this virus, and an intriguing aspect is that when someone dies, as long as their brain remains intact, they will resurrect.
It has been demonstrated that every individual globally carries this virus, and upon death, they invariably resurface, provided their brain remains intact.
Although Kirkman never disclosed the source of the Walking Dead virus, the series subtly suggested that it wasn’t an unexplainable supernatural occurrence. Early on in the first season, Rick and his group visited the CDC where a researcher, nearing despair, revealed they had been working on understanding the cause and finding a cure for the outbreak. However, neither the source nor the cure were discovered (as far as the CDC or its collaborating labs knew) before operations ceased.
A TWD Mystery That Should Have Been Left Untouched
As a die-hard fan of “The Walking Dead”, I can’t help but ponder over the revelation they’ve dropped about the beginning of the apocalypse. Frankly, I’m not convinced that this was an essential piece of the puzzle. In fact, it seems the creators and showrunners themselves share my doubts, as they chose to subtly hint at it in a post-credits scene for a spinoff that didn’t quite hit the mark. It appears they were saving this tidbit for those most dedicated viewers, like me, as a sort of reward for our loyalty. However, instead of providing clarity, it leaves us with even more unanswered questions.
The issue with any resolution to the major mystery in The Walking Dead is that it fails to provide answers. For instance, how did a virus like this spread from France to the U.S., and subsequently across the globe at an unprecedented speed, when the lab that originated it couldn’t issue a warning or transfer all its research to other labs worldwide? Although it’s plausible that infected individuals could travel unaware of their condition until they perished, this doesn’t fully account for the rapid global collapse. It might be that this was just a decoy and not the true cause of the apocalypse. That’s what makes the show so intriguing – the way the answer is subtly hinted at but never explicitly revealed. It leaves room for speculation that this could have merely been the beginning of the end of humanity.
