The Shocking Truth: The Only Pirate Who Defeated Gol D. Roger Revealed!

This article contains spoilers from One Piece’s Elbaf arc.

Summary

  • Roger was an elite pirate, only tied in strength by Whitebeard and matched by Garp.
  • One piece went to great lengths to show Roger’s immense strength & limited number of rivals.
  • Roger’s biggest enemy may have been Rocks D. Xebec, who beat him in a previous fight 39 years ago.

In the realm of “One Piece”, only a select few possess the skill to engage in high-level combat and match up against formidable characters like the Pirate King, Gol D. Roger. Oda consistently portrays that during his pirating days, Gol D. Roger amassed everything — fortune, prestige, and authority.

Although it’s clear that Roger was incredibly strong at the end of his journey and gained great fame, we must remember that he didn’t start out that way. Just like everyone else, Roger had to begin somewhere. There were moments in his story where he faced defeat, such as a lost battle that may seem difficult to imagine. These aspects of Roger’s life were subtly suggested during the Egghead Island arc, and now, Elbaf is delving deeper into this part of his past.

The Immense Strength Of The Pirate King In One Piece

  • The Pirate King Was The Strongest
  • Whitebeard And Garp Were His Only Match

In terms of raw power, it’s well-known among fans that Roger, the pirate, was an unparalleled force, with strength that very few could even come close to matching. In the realm of One Piece, only one pirate is acknowledged to have fought him on equal footing – none other than Edward Newgate, who’s also known as Whitebeard. These two were equally formidable in terms of power. On the side of the Marines, it’s Garp who stands out as the only one with enough strength to measure up to Roger, having been stated to have cornered him on multiple instances.

Rocks was Roger’s biggest enemy. — Sengoku

However, Roger himself acknowledged Sengoku as an equally formidable adversary. Fans, through the Elbaf storyline, understand that Rayleigh and Scopper Gaban were equals to Roger in strength. This reinforces the idea that there weren’t many who could rival Roger. This is not unexpected, considering Roger’s mastery of Haki and possession of a Supreme Grade weapon. Yet, it’s possible that one character may have bested Roger in the past.

How Rocks D. Xebec Is Implied To Have Beaten Roger

Xebec And Roger Met 1 Year Before God Valley

Readers are aware that Roger and Rocks D. Xebec engaged in a fight at God Valley. It was subsequently disclosed that it was a combined effort by Garp and Roger that defeated Rocks D. Xebec, leading to the dissolution of his pirate crew. Yet, another battle occurred between them a year before the God Valley Incident as well.

Has a full year passed since our last encounter with Rocks? Can you imagine the emotions I’ve experienced throughout this time, Roger?

During Kuma’s flashback sequence, it was disclosed that Roger had a meeting with Rocks a year before the God Valley Incident, which Roger later confirmed to his audience. The details of this encounter remain unclear, but it’s been suggested that Roger harbors resentful memories from their past interactions. This strongly suggests that the last time they met didn’t go well for Roger and he may have lost to Xebec in this encounter.

It becomes even clearer when you factor in Sengoku’s claim that Rocks D. Xebec was a more formidable adversary to Roger than Whitebeard, possibly even his greatest enemy. There’s strong evidence suggesting they clashed at God Valley as well, and it’s plausible that this confrontation took place 39 years ago, with Roger likely suffering the loss.
