Summary
- The Sims 2 re-release on Steam has a “Mixed” rating.
- The game seems to suffer from serious crashes and bugs.
In a somewhat disappointing response, the re-launch of “The Sims 2” for PC on Steam has been met with mixed reviews from users. The combined edition of “The Sims” and “The Sims 2”, titled “Legacy Collection,” was made available on PC on January 31, 2025.
Over the past 20 years or so, “The Sims” series has consistently stood out in the simulation genre, generating vast amounts of revenue for its publisher, EA. Following the switch to free-to-play with “The Sims 4” in 2022, the game’s player count has expanded significantly. In October 2024, it was announced that over 15 million new players had joined the game within the past year alone. Although the game developed by Maxis has gained a large number of new players lately, there is also a substantial group of long-term enthusiasts who make up a significant portion of the player community. Lately, this dedicated fanbase received some exciting news: EA re-released the first two “Sims” games for modern PCs. However, not all players of these classic titles appear to have been convinced by the re-release.
To put it simply, “The Sims 2 Legacy Collection” is experiencing poorer performance than anticipated on Steam, earning a “Mixed” rating from 536 reviews at this moment. The majority of negative feedback centers around recurring crashes and various types of glitches. It’s worth noting that the disappointing reviews aren’t solely from players who abandoned the game quickly but also from those who have spent multiple hours playing it. One user, who played the re-release for more than eight hours, expressed frustration over the game inexplicably deleting their Sim characters. Another player, with around seven hours of playtime, encountered a crash immediately after creating their Sim character and mentioned an irritating bug affecting the in-game oven as well.
The Sims 2 Re-Release Faces Criticism, Whereas The Sims Legacy Collection Gets Positive Response
Despite receiving unfavorable feedback, a positive aspect of the re-release of The Sims 2 Legacy Collection on Steam is the high number of concurrent players it attracted, reaching approximately 5000 players on its debut day. Although this figure doesn’t compare to the daily interaction with The Sims 4, it’s still an impressive number for a remake of an older game. On the downside, The Sims Legacy Collection currently maintains a “Mostly Positive” rating on Steam, based on 278 user reviews. However, it appears that the original re-release, The Sims Legacy Collection, has not been as well-received as its counterpart, The Sims, peaking at around 2000 concurrent players on Steam on its launch day.
2025 holds significance for enthusiasts of The Sims, as it commemorates the 25-year milestone of this beloved franchise. According to rumors, Maxis is gearing up to unveil additional Downloadable Content (DLC) for The Sims 4, guaranteeing a steady supply of new material for fans to enjoy.
