The Sims 4’s new ‘Adventure Awaits’ expansion is making waves! It finally adds camping, peaceful retreats, and even vacation spots inspired by shows like ‘Love Island,’ giving players a relaxing escape from everyday Sim life. This expansion is full of activities for Sims of all ages, with adventures designed to fit how everyone likes to play.
This Expansion Pack really focused on making childhood fun! Most Sims expansions center around adult activities, but “Adventure Awaits” offers exciting things for Sims of all ages. It introduces new skills and memories, letting players really embrace a child’s sense of wonder and exploration. A key part of this was bringing back Imaginary Friends, which were updated from their previous version in The Sims 3. Despite all the playful additions, Imaginary Friends could have been even more central to the game with just one more feature.
The Sims 4’s Imaginary Friends Fall Flat When The Magic Fades
The Imaginary Friends feature in *The Sims 4* seemed very promising. The initial trailer showed these friends teaming up with children and creating special memories. The game itself delivers on that idea. Children’s interactions with their Imaginary Friends can be anything from fun games to little pranks. Each Imaginary Friend doll has a unique personality – there are four different types – which affects what they do and helps shape the child’s developing character.

Just because kids grow up doesn’t mean the fun has to end in *The Sims 4*. When a child ages up, their Imaginary Friend can magically become real and grow alongside them. These friends can fully integrate into the household, going to school, getting jobs, forming relationships, and even getting married as adults. However, once they become adults, they completely lose the special qualities that made them imaginary, and their past seems to have no impact on their personality or life. This feels like a missed opportunity in the game.

Imaginary Friends’ Adulthood Means Nothing

In *The Sims 4*, when an Imaginary Friend becomes real, the special feeling doesn’t last. It should be a heartwarming moment for a child and their long-time companion, but it feels surprisingly empty. The transition lacks emotional impact and meaningful gameplay, making this feature feel underdeveloped – more like a faint childhood memory than a complete addition to the game. This is where the system doesn’t quite work.
- Imaginary Friends lose all sense of identity: When a household gets an Imaginary Friend in The Sims 4, their arrival from Imagination Land is magic. Their existence is magic. The fun they offer is magic. But when they turn real, they don’t retain anything that sets them apart from a standard Sim. Apart from visual quirks and randomized traits, they have no special powers and no trace of their whimsical origins.
- Imaginary Friends should have been an occult life state: The game treats an extraordinary transformation like a routine event. Imaginary Friends could’ve been a hidden or unlockable occult form, not available in Create-A-Sim, but discovered through play. That would’ve made them feel genuinely magical instead of just newly corporeal.
- There’s zero emotional or narrative recognition: No special fanfare, no bewilderment from other Sims, and no sign that anyone finds it odd or wonderful that a stuffed doll just became a roommate. It’s a moment that should feel profound. Instead, it barely registers.
- An Imaginary Friend’s legacy disappears completely: Other occults in The Sims 4 pass down defining traits, from fangs and bloodlines to newborn howls. Imaginary Friends pass down nothing. Even The Sims 3 gave their offspring distinctive physical features as a playful reminder of their origin. Here, that sense of inheritance and identity is gone.
Imaginary Friends could have been a fantastic addition to The Sims, capturing the magic of turning childhood dreams into playable stories. However, they ended up feeling underdeveloped. This might show that The Sims sometimes struggles to maintain the playful spirit that makes it so popular.
