The Sims 4’s Updates for Ghosts Should Only Be the Tip of the Iceberg

The Sims 4's Updates for Ghosts Should Only Be the Tip of the Iceberg

As a seasoned Simmer with over a decade of virtual life management under my belt, I can confidently say that the latest update for The Sims 4 has been a game-changer, quite literally! Ghosts, long overlooked as mere specters of fun, have finally stepped out of the shadows and into the limelight.

Typically, before any new DLC for “The Sims 4” is released, a significant base game update is common. Given that October 22 was expected to bring updates for the simulator game, many players were hoping for enhancements or expansions related to ghost occult types. Since the latest expansion pack centers around the afterlife, this anticipation seemed reasonable, considering ghosts are among the two occult species in “The Sims 4” base game. However, this latest update might alter the role of occult types in “The Sims 4” significantly instead.

In The Sims 4, the majority of game updates introduce ghosts as a spiritual entity, comparable to mermaids, vampires, and werewolves. Now, players can craft ghost characters at any age using Create-a-Sim (CAS). These ghostly beings have unique requirements, and players can decide whether a Sim becomes a “Playable Ghost” or a “Floating Ghost” upon their demise. Future additions such as a skill tree for power development, common in DLC occult types, are part of the upcoming “Life & Death” Expansion Pack. This decision makes sense since many occult types weren’t initially present in The Sims 4 base game.

The Sims 4’s Latest Base Game Update Opens the Door for Other Occult Updates

As a devoted fan, I must say that the recent update took me by surprise not just because of the base game changes, but also because even the DLC packs received some spectral updates! Now, when my Sims kick the bucket, I can pick out a fitting gravestone or urn for them. The creators have added new grave and urn options in the occult-themed packs, such as mermaid graves in the “Island Living” expansion. However, the biggest shocker is reserved for those who own the “Cats & Dogs” or “Horse Ranch” expansions. Now, our beloved pets – cats, dogs, and horses – can continue their afterlife adventures as they’ve been given the power to become ghostly entities!

It’s not surprising that, given how often death is featured in The Sims 4, an expansion pack focusing on Life & Death and ghostly updates would eventually be released. This release paves the way for other supernatural species to receive updates within the game, with one specific type long overdue – a type that has been neglected since its re-introduction into the series in 2017.

PlantSims Deserve the Same Treatment as Ghosts

Makin’ Magic.

In the game, after consuming a Forbidden Fruit (either acquired via Plant-A-Sim or by growing Magic Beans), players can transform their characters into PlantSims for five days. While this transformation gives their Sims an unusual and entertaining appearance, it doesn’t bring any significant advantages compared to regular Sims. Unlike regular Sims, PlantSims obtain nutrients through sunlight exposure and drinking large quantities of water instead of eating food or using the bathroom. However, unlike ghosts who can pass through objects, break items, and engage in various mischievous activities, PlantSims do not gain any additional powers from this transformation.

Refreshing ghost characters with the Life & Death expansion pack demonstrates that similar upgrades can be done for PlantSims. Given their current low popularity, it seems unlikely that PlantSims will receive an individual update. However, this could change if a new plant-themed pack is introduced into The Sims 4.

How a PlantSims Refresh Could Be Possible

Among the most fitting updates for refreshing PlantSims would have been either Seasons or Eco Lifestyle. While there are other packs with plant themes such as the Romantic Garden stuff pack (2016), Blooming Rooms (2021), and Greenhouse Haven (2023) Kits, it’s understandable that PlantSim updates didn’t occur in these DLCs because Romantic Garden was released before The Sims 4 introduced PlantSims. However, not having a PlantSim update in Seasons or Eco Lifestyle seems like an oversight.

In order for PlantSims to be introduced in The Sims 4, it would need to align with a plant-themed expansion pack. At present, there doesn’t appear to be a clear direction for what this expansion might contain, as careers and skills related to plants such as gardener, florist, botanist, and farming have already been incorporated into the game through its DLC. This suggests that an update for PlantSims may not be forthcoming in the near future, despite the fact that the occult species could certainly benefit from it.

In order for the Occult-type characters to stay current within the “The Sims” franchise, The Sims 4 could follow the approach it took with ghosts by incorporating PlantSims more extensively using expansions like Life & Death and regular game updates.
