Project Rene, the next iteration of The Sims, has been in the works since at least 2022. Since announcing the project in October of that year, the developers at Maxis have held several private playtests, giving players a sneak peek at how the game works. Despite the tests being exclusive and under non-disclosure agreements, information has consistently leaked online, as often happens with fan-accessible projects. Because of this, screenshots and details from almost every Project Rene playtest have appeared online since the game was first announced.

Recently, more details about the upcoming game Project Rene surfaced online. Screenshots and player accounts from a mid-November 2025 playtest quickly appeared. The playtest featured several small games, including one called “Fashion Passion.” This game seems very similar to the popular Roblox experience Dress To Impress. Like the original Dress To Impress from 2003, players in Fashion Passion have to create outfits based on random themes, all against the clock. Players can then rate each other’s creations using a five-star system, and the best outfits earn in-game rewards.
Sims Fans Unimpressed With ‘Dress to Impress’ Knockoff in Project Rene
Early reactions to the recent Project Rene test are mostly negative. Players on Reddit have been quick to share their disappointment, with some comparing it unfavorably to existing games like MovieStarPlanet and Dress to Impress. One user even called the test an “abomination,” and another described the game’s design as looking worse than something made by a hobbyist, specifically mentioning Dress to Impress as a point of comparison. The leaked test has also brought renewed criticism of Project Rene‘s cartoonish art style, which some fans dislike.
Project Rene Could Be a Hit Despite Backlash from Sims Fans
Honestly, all the negativity surrounding Project Rene doesn’t make me think it’s going to flop. It seems like most of the complaints are coming from us, the hardcore Sims fans who’ve been playing for years. But from what I’ve seen, Project Rene is clearly aiming for a different crowd – a younger audience, maybe? And that actually makes sense, because EA has already said it’s not The Sims 5. They want it to be its own thing, something that can live alongside The Sims 4, not replace it.
I’m really excited about Project Rene, but unfortunately, EA hasn’t announced when it’s coming out yet. What I do know is they’re building it for both PC and mobile, which is awesome, and it sounds like we’ll be able to play with friends no matter what device they’re on thanks to cross-play!
