The Smallville Animated Sequel Is Being Hindered By The WBD Reorganization

Summary

  • Smallville animated series facing delays due to Warner Bros Discovery leadership changes.
  • The project’s original creators and cast are eager to return, promising success.
  • There is still strong fan demand for the show’s return, despite current setbacks.

As a die-hard fan, I’m eagerly anticipating James Gunn’s reboot of Superman on the big screen, which is only a few months away now. Meanwhile, my heart yearns for a revival of one cherished small-screen adaptation that’s yet to inch closer to its animated comeback.

For a long time, Superman has been the iconic comic book character, surpassing many others in adaptations. Among the TV shows that brought him to life, Smallville is one of the most respected, running for 10 seasons and depicting a young Clark Kent evolving into the Steel Man fans adore. The series was so popular that DC launched a comic book sequel after it ended, but it didn’t meet the expectations of many fans who had supported the TV show. Therefore, it was heartening to learn that a Smallville animated series was in development, with the original cast reprising their roles. This project, led by main actor Tom Welling and Lex Luthor Michael Rosenbaum, also received support from the creators of Smallville.

Regrettably for enthusiasts, it appears that the chaos at WBD might be delaying the approval of the project. However, given its exceptional concept, it’s almost impossible for the company to resist. If the upcoming animated series manages to maintain the quality that made the original show outstanding, such as the memorable gradual development of Clark into Superman depicted in Smallville, then success and longevity are all but assured. This project could narrate numerous heartfelt stories, cultivate a new generation of Superman fans beyond theaters, and even become financially profitable for the brand due to the straightforward route to merchandising that animation offers. It’s challenging to dispute that this isn’t an opportunity WBD would seize, as demonstrated by the Harley Quinn show enduring the company’s troubles and even being renewed again. With almost the entire original cast eager to return for the animated sequel as a labor of love, there’s hardly a more enticing proposal the company could receive.

As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I can’t help but notice the persistent enthusiasm among fans for more of their beloved shows, such as James Gunn’s Superman, which has been given a fresh Smallville-inspired take due to fan demand. Alas, it seems the stars aren’t quite aligned for the sequel project at WBD right now, but here’s hoping that our fervent wishes will one day be granted, just like they were for the Buffy the Vampire Slayer fandom. Fingers crossed that we won’t have to endure as long a wait as they did before their favorite franchise got the go-ahead for another run on our screens.

Smallville is available to stream on Hulu.
