Highlights
- Not all versions of Captain America fit the superhero category, with some being downright evil or powerful in alternate universes.
- Bucky Barnes took up the mantle of Captain America after Steve Rogers’ death, proving to be a worthy leader with his dark past and honor.
- Despite various powerful versions, the original Earth-616 Steve Rogers remains iconic with his leadership abilities and worthiness to wield Mjölnir.
As a long-time comic book enthusiast who has witnessed countless iterations of Captain America, I must say that each version brings something unique and captivating to the table. From the ethnically diverse Commander A, a powerful fusion of various cultures, to Chris Evans’ portrayal in the MCU, which breathes life into the beloved character we all know and love.
Among Marvel’s longest-standing superheroes, Captain America has encountered numerous variations throughout his tenure. These differences can stem from alternate timelines, the opening of a multiverse, or even the death of Steve Rogers himself, causing the iconic shield to be passed on to various individuals. In truth, it is no longer the original version that commands the greatest strength. Nevertheless, not every portrayal of this cherished figure fits comfortably within the superhero genre.
Among these alternative forms, some adhere to the well-known code of honor and bravery, while others exhibit pure wickedness. At this point, deciding which incarnations of Captain America are good and which are bad is a topic for another conversation. For now, let me share the strongest versions of Captain America, as provided by the Marvel universe.
10 Bucky Barnes
The Winter Soldier
Every Marvel enthusiast is well-acquainted with Bucky Barnes, more commonly known as the Winter Soldier. This character, who started out as Captain America’s best friend, often found himself on the opposite side. Despite not holding the title of Captain America in the MCU, his comic book counterpart proved worthy to wield the shield.
After the Civil War storyline in the comics, Steve Rogers is killed, leaving the position of Captain America vacant. To step into those big shoes, the reformed Winter Soldier assumed the role. With his troubled past and a desire to uphold the memory of his deceased friend, Bucky demonstrated himself as a capable leader. However, Bucky’s tenure as Captain America was brief, as Steve Rogers eventually resurfaced to reclaim the title once more.
9 Captain Colonies
A Product Of The Multiverse
For those who don’t typically read comics, this might be unexpected: one of Captain America’s strongest versions goes by a different name – Captain Colonies. That’s when things get intriguing as the Marvel multiverse unfolds, and introduces Captain Colonies.
Hailing from an alternate reality, Captain Colonies is a member of the Captain Britain Corps, a collective of heroes from various universes, much like the Green Lantern Corps. Each Captain Britain possesses unique, unspecified powers. With a formidable team of soldiers at his side, Captain Colonies joins the ranks of the multiverse’s Captain Americas, adding another powerful figure to their number.
8 Steve Rogers 616
The Original Captain America
Despite numerous adaptations, nothing quite matches the essence of the original. The Earth-616 iteration of Captain America may not be the mightiest, but it’s the one that draws fans time and again. With his unwavering adherence to honor, courage, and valor, this version of Roger transforms Captain America into an iconic superhero within the franchise.
616 Steve Rogers might not be as physically strong as some others, but what gives him real power are his exceptional leadership skills and ability to command the Avengers. It’s also worth noting that this version of Captain America proved himself worthy enough to lift Mjölnir due to his unblemished character.
7 Danielle Cage
A Look Into The Future
Danielle, the child of Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, has stepped into the role of Captain America, demonstrating heroism like her parents. With powers inherited from both, Danielle stands strong as a hero in her own league. By embracing the values of Steve Rogers and wielding an advanced shield, she emerges as one of the mightiest characters to carry on the legacy of Captain America.
In truth, throughout Danielle’s life in her bleak, dystopian world, she receives guidance from Black Widow. This mentorship significantly strengthens her character. Furthermore, she possesses a unique talent for time travel. Ultimately, after all events unfold, she rises to lead the U.S. Avengers in her distinct universe.
6 Vampire
One Bloodlust Scenario
In the realm of gaming, I’ve stumbled upon a version of myself as Captain America, but this time, he’s not just a super soldier – he’s a bloodthirsty Vampire. Now, this character might be unfamiliar to many casual gamers, but let me tell you, he’s as powerful and sinister as they come. This twisted version of Cap hails from Earth-3931, an alternate universe where the Avengers have been infected by Baron Strucker’s blood, transforming them into vampires.
In my perspective as an ardent fan, the transformed vampire Captain America, numbered 3391, grows even more powerful yet wrestles with inner turmoil. Upon their arrival on this earth to rectify its flaws, the Exiles confront these bloodthirsty Avengers. Regrettably, in the climactic battle, this version of Cap succumbs, his life cut short by Mimic, who wields Wolverine’s claws to sever his head.
5 Sam Wilson
Steve Roger’s Chosen One
Although Sam Wilson didn’t receive the Super-Serum injection, he has assumed the role of Captain America across various narratives. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Steve Rogers personally chooses Sam Wilson to carry on the Captain America legacy. In comic book tales, a common narrative finds Sam rising to the position as Rogers grows older.
In every instance, Sam consistently demonstrates that he deserves the Captain’s shield through his integrity and courage. Equipped with the might of his wings, talents, and the Captain’s shield, Sam transforms into an unstoppable hero across all battlefields. Furthermore, he secures a spot among the most formidable iterations of Captain America.
4 Kiyoshi Morales
Mixing Versatility And Strength
Kiyoshi Morales, who represents a blend of Latino, African American, Japanese, and Native American heritage, brings an extraordinary flair to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Captain America series. More famously known as Commander A, this character emerged in a brief narrative titled Captain America Corps. In this alternate tale, he embodies a strong future iteration of Captain America.
Though the protagonist is multiracial in origin, he can be traced back to Luke Cage’s lineage, which explains his immense power. Moreover, instead of traditional vibranium, Kiyoshi Morales utilizes two energy-based shields for both offensive and defensive purposes, adding an intriguing twist to his combat capabilities.
3 MCU
Chris Evans Taking Cap To Another Level
Everyone knows the Captain America portrayed in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, played by Chris Evans. This version of Cap closely resembles his Earth-616 counterpart. With Chris Evans perfectly embodying the role, the character became alive and demonstrated his value countless times.
As a gamer, I’d put it like this: Wielding the mighty Mjölnir, I almost single-handedly brought Thanos down. To top it off, the legendary “Avengers Assemble” call saw the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe rallying behind me. With my shield, Mjölnir, and the collective power of the Avengers, I became a pivotal figure in our victory over our ultimate foe.
2 Secret Empire
Evil, Wicked, And Powerful
In a manner reminiscent of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Captain America, this portrayal also carried an emblematic phrase. Yet, it stood in stark contrast. Within this alternate reality, Captain America transformed into a covert Hydra agent. The moment he uttered “Hail Hydra” was nothing short of startling.
Cap was already formidable, but with sinister intentions, he became a greater danger. That’s why this portrayal of Steve Rogers is so potent. It’s fortunate that he generally stands on the side of good, as facing an evil Captain America would make for a challenging workday for the Avengers.
1 Soldier Supreme
A Warrior Made Out Of Magic
In the alternate reality of Infinity Warps, the ultimate Soldier emerged – a fusion of the world’s most potent sorcerer and its strongest fighter. This extraordinary being was forged when Steve Rogers blended his physical form with Doctor Strange, giving birth to Stephen Rogers, a mighty warrior endowed with magical abilities.
Without a doubt, this iteration of Captain America is unquestionably the most powerful across all realities. By merging the potency of the Super Serum with his magical prowess, he embodies the ideal blend of two extraordinary forces. As depicted in the comic books, he served valiantly during World War II and emerged as America’s ultimate weapon.
