Initially, I didn’t have the “cool factor” to play the original version of The Thing back in its day, but now that I’m mature enough to stay up late and enjoy frightening games under the cover of darkness, The Thing Remastered – the updated cult favorite – swiftly landed on my list to play. Upon release, it functioned smoothly, albeit with a few minor bugs and technical hiccups, which is understandable for a game that’s over two decades old. However, Nightdive Studios has consistently shown their expertise, and they’ve now rolled out The Thing Remastered Patch 1.1 to rectify numerous issues!
The Thing Remastered Patch 1.1 Notes
Clearly visible in the extensive updates initially shared on Steam, Nightdive Studios has chosen to tackle a wide range of issues, including achievement glitches and game freezes, as well as improving Steam Deck compatibility. The enhanced Steam Deck performance is particularly noteworthy since it’s my preferred platform for playing survival horror games.
Here’s a look at the entire list of patch notes:
1. We’ve sorted out the Conspiracy Theorist achievement! If you had an old saved game, it will now work seamlessly.
2. We tweaked the description for Colin’s Fate achievement to make it clearer.
3. We squashed a bug where Stoll would get stuck at the black tech lab door.
4. We fixed a crash that could occur when setting off C4 on the airstrip level.
5. We resolved a rare, occasional crash during battles with Thing beasts.
6. We added a “Most Recent” button to the load game menu for easier navigation.
7. Autosaves now show the name of the level they were saved from, not just “Autosave”.
8. We fixed an issue where characters could get stuck on higher surfaces after falling off curbs in the roadway tunnel.
9. We resolved a crash that occurred when you quit the game.
10. We fixed a problem where bindings would be missing from the input options at first launch.
11. We squashed a bug in Strata Medibay that happened when Fisk died before giving you the code.
12. We adjusted Blake’s hand positioning to avoid clipping with his sleeve in the first cutscene with Faraday.
13. We fixed an issue where the second camera angle wouldn’t activate during the weather station cutscene, allowing you to interrupt it and recruit yourself.
14. We enhanced performance when checking dynamic game options.
15. We moved game version information from the interstitial screen to the options menu for easier access.
16. We reduced the visibility of the game version information to make it less intrusive.
17. We reintroduced the pan upwards effect when the game over screen is displayed.
18. We added support for autoexec.cfg, allowing users to customize console variables not typically saved in kexEngine.cfg.
Gameplay Adjustments:
1. Corrected an issue with weapon firing rates not functioning correctly when rapidly pressing the fire button, except for the pistol.
2. Adjusted ammo and health dispensers to release fewer clips and medkits based on the game’s difficulty level. This can be adjusted during gameplay.
3. Labeled certain grenades as “volatile” so they detonate when damaged, replicating the original game’s behavior to address a problem where non-exploding cinematic grenades were placed.
4. Altered Blake’s orientation after a cutscene in the weather station level to maintain consistency.
Modifications:
– Rectified an issue in the final stage where a barrel exploded upon encountering a triggered tripwire from a previously detonated mine.
– Concealed the “Back Door Key” item, disguised as a document, in the underwater level.
– Corrected incorrect collision issues in the initial level, preventing characters from appearing to sink into the snow.
– Adjusted collision problems in the third stage’s watchtower where players could get trapped in the railing.
– Changed Carter’s name to Hawk in the Strata Medibay level, leveraging unused voice lines.
– Added a missing green light to a save terminal in the third level.
– Rectified two computers in the weather station level that were not assigned an ID for the Conspiracy Theorist achievement (previously granted automatically to older saves).
– Lowered a medipack dispenser in the level following Strata Medibay that was excessively high.
– Corrected collision issues on the external stairs in the weather station.
– Rotated several ammo boxes that were facing incorrectly.
– Fixed various collision bugs in the Norwegian outpost where players could fall off the map and pass below the building.
– Eliminated persistent sound problems across multiple levels that would result in the game eventually becoming silent.
1. Resolved an issue causing depth of field to occasionally produce bright, flashing pixels.
2. Made the submersible’s doors glass transparent instead of opaque.
3. Enhanced normal maps on numerous posters and boards for a more realistic appearance.
4. Provided Whitley with a new pair of trousers.
5. Altered the watermark in the editor build to prevent confusion among users.
6. Boosted performance when using the D3D11 renderer.
Sound:
– Fixed a bug where speech audio would sometimes not follow the speaker.
As a gamer, I’ve sorted out the issue where the frame rate was stuck at half the screen refresh rate whenever I used the Vulkan renderer on the Steam Deck, but only when it wasn’t launched through the Steam client. Now it runs smoothly!
Speaking of horror, check out what we consider to be the 10 best horror games ever!
